Shanghai, China (My Sportsbook) - Tenth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez and former world No. 1 Marat Safin were among Monday's opening-round winners at the $5.25 million Shanghai ATP Masters.
The Chilean Gonzalez was tied with Mischa Zverev 7-5, 6-7 (0-7), 2-2 when the German retired with a right wrist injury early in the third set. "Gonzo" will face Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci in the round of 32.
Meanwhile, the wild card Safin, playing his last professional event in China, handled Chinese wild card Mao-Xin Gong 6-4, 6-4. The 29-year-old Safin will retire from the ATP World Tour at the end of this season.
Gonzalez wasn't the only seeded winner on Day 2, as No. 13 Czech Radek Stepanek whipped former top-ranked Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-0, No. 14 Spaniard Tommy Robredo handled French qualifier Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-4 and No. 16 Spaniard David Ferrer leveled Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-3 on the hardcourts at Qi Zhong Tennis Center, the former site of the ATP's Tennis Masters Cup.
American James Blake advanced by sneaking past 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Karlovic, who holds the record for smashing 78 aces in a match during a five-set loss against Stepanek in a Davis Cup semifinal last month, fired 27 aces at Blake in a losing effort on Monday.
Blake's second-round opponent will be top-seeded Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal, the reigning Aussie Open champion and former word No. 1.
Additional Day-2 wins came for the qualifier Bellucci, German qualifiers Rainer Schuettler and Florian Mayer, Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, and Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini. Wawrinka will battle fourth-seeded Wimbledon runner- up Andy Roddick in the second round, while Fognini will take on last week's China Open champ Novak Djokovic.
This inaugural event closes out a three-week Asian swing on the ATP and the eventual winner will take home $616,500.
