Scoscia not thinking about Angels-Dodgers series

Mike Scioscia wants everyone to slow down on that whole Freeway Series thing.

The Angels manager - and former Dodgers catcher - had just eliminated the Boston Red Sox in the playoffs when he was reminded that the other L.A. team had also swept through the first round.

So, how would he feel about an all-Los Angeles World Series? It is the first time the Angels and Dodgers are playing for the pennant in the same year.

``We're not going that far right now,'' he said. ``Believe me, we have a huge challenge in front of us. Before we talk about a Freeway Series we're going to have to beat an incredible team in the Yankees, or a team that might be a team of destiny with the Twins.

The New York Yankees took a 2-0 lead into Game 3 of their first-round series against the Minnesota Twins.

``So we're going to have our hands full whoever we end up playing in the championship series,'' Scioscia said. ``I'll leave it to the fans and the writers to talk about all that stuff.''

The Dodgers finished off their sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.

DOME SWEET DOME: Temperatures hovered in the low 30s in Minnesota for Game 3. Inside the Metrodome it was a comfortable 68 degrees.

If this were 2010, the Yankees and Twins would have played outdoors at Target Field.

Brrrrr!

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire just shrugged.

``It's cold out there, that's what it's going to be like,'' he said. ``We knew that going in, when they built it. And you know what? We have had guys here, the (Tony) Olivas and (Rod) Carews and (Harmon) Killebrews, we talked about it and they said it was cold out. But it's outdoor baseball. That's what we got, and during the summer it's going to be wonderful.''

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was asked if he would rather play in the indoor comforts of the Metrodome and endure 55,000 screaming, towel-waving fans or play outdoors where the crowd noise will be diminished, but the cold will be biting.

``I think players prefer playing in a little bit warmer conditions than 32 and a couple inches of snow,'' Girardi said, alluding to forecasts of 2 to 3 inches of snow for Monday. ``To us, you want to know that you're going to play. ... So if we had to choose between outside or inside, I think we'd choose inside.''

Game 3 of the series between the Rockies and Phillies was postponed on Saturday because of snow and temperatures in the low 20s at the scheduled game time. Gardenhire said potentially having to juggle the schedule because of weather in the future will be offset by the Twins having a home of their own. They have shared the Metrodome with the Vikings and University of Minnesota football teams for most of the past 28 years, which occasionally led to last-minute schedule changes.

``That is going to be our ballpark,'' Gardenhire said. ``No waiting for anybody else to play a game so we can play, no having to quit early so we can play, quit our game early to get them in, none of that. It's going to be Minnesota Twins baseball. That's what we are all after, a beautiful ballpark built for our fans. That was company line right there.''

MAUER'S HEALTH: Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer has been playing through the pain of a sore hip flexor muscle, but was emphatic in telling manager Ron Gardenhire that being the DH was not an option for Game 3 against the Yankees.

He was behind the plate and batting his usual third in the lineup for the Twins.

``No consideration whatsoever,'' Gardenhire said of putting Mauer in the DH role. ``I can't tell you how it's feeling and how much it hurts. You would have to ask him, and he is going to tell you the same thing he told me on the plane, 'I have been playing with it for a few days here and I will continue to play with it.'''

Mauer said after Friday's Game 2 loss to the Yankees that his hip was a little worn out after catching all 12 innings of an emotional one-game playoff against the Tigers that clinched the AL Central title on Tuesday, then having to catch Game 1 of the ALDS in New York on Wednesday.

It hasn't slowed down his hitting. The AL batting champion was 4 for 8 in the first two games of the series.

One area it may affect is Mauer's ability to run the bases. Despite being a 6-foot-5 catcher, Mauer has good speed on the base paths and routinely goes first to third on base hits.

But Gardenhire said he tweaked the injury on Friday while rounding a base and hasn't been his normal aggressive self.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
