Foxborough, MA (My Sportsbook) - The Columbus Crew are one of three Major League Soccer teams to have booked their ticket to the 2009 postseason, but that doesn't mean they have nothing to play for over their final three regular season games.
The Crew are also gunning for their second consecutive Supporter's Shield, and hope a win at New England on Saturday gets them that much closer.
Columbus (12-5-10) is coming off its first home loss of the season, 1-0 to Seattle, and will be gunning to take their frustrations out of the Revs.
"We attacked for 90 minutes so I didn't see anybody tired. We pushed for a goal until the last minute," Crew coach Robert Warzycha said. "It was a fluky goal we gave up. We had the momentum at the time. The guys kept pushing for the goal. It wasn't our night."
The loss snapped the Crew's MLS record 22-game home unbeaten run and 24 match run in all competitions without a loss at Crew Stadium.
"It's something we take a lot of pride in," Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer said. "I'm really disappointed for the fans because ever since they put together that Nordecke section we've made this place a fortress. We've fought hard for them and as you can tell at the end of the game they make everybody play with heart whether you want to or not. You feel their passion. It's infectious. You can't help but feel it on the field."
"It's better to lose now than the playoffs. We have to look forward to the games left. We have to try to win the Supporters' Shield," Crew defender Gino Padula said.
The Revs (10-9-8) will be gunning to hold on the last spot in the playoffs after settling for a 1-1 draw at Colorado last weekend.
"We're always wanting more, but they threatened and they looked positive," Revs coach Steve Nicol said. "The one thing we wanted after Wednesday was to be positive going forward. We somewhat went towards that. We still didn't get as much out of it as we wanted, but we certainly thought the attitude and the conviction was good."
The Revs control their own destiny, but need to get positive results in their final three to have a shot at the playoffs.
"We need to get some decisions going our way. We'll battle on and we still have it in our hands and we fully expect to get into the playoffs," Nicol said.
New England will be playing without defender Chris Albright, midfielder Steve Ralston, and forward Taylor Twellman, while defender Jay Heaps and forward Edgaras Jankauskas are doubtful, and midfielder Jeff Larentowicz is questionable.
The Crew will be without defender Danny O'Rourke because of suspension, midfielder Robbie Rogers and defender Frankie Hejduk because of international duty, and backup goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and defender Chad Marshall because of injury.
