San Pedro Sula, Honduras (My Sportsbook) - U.S. coach Bob Bradley is pretty comfortable with his team sitting atop the final CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group with two matches left but hopes to "finish up things Saturday," when the team can clinch a berth in the 2010 World Cup.
Although the U.S. is in a comfortable spot to qualify for its sixth straight World Cup, it is still in danger of failing to advance to the final's in South Africa next year.
The Americans path is clear: win at Honduras on Saturday to clinch a Cup spot, in addition to being in control of their own destiny to capture the group when they host Costa Rica in their final qualifier Wednesday.
Honduras is also fighting for a Cup berth - its first since 1982 - and is also perfect at home with four victories in as many final round qualifying matches. Honduras sits in third - the last automatic berth from CONCACAF - just three back of the U.S., two behind Mexico and just one ahead of Costa Rica.
The team that slips to fourth will be forced to play a two-game series against a South American club - which could be Argentina - to advance to the Cup.
Bradley hopes the U.S., which won't have starting midfielder Clint Dempsey, can erase that possibility by taking care of business on the road.
"Everybody is excited for this last stretch of qualifying and we understand the challenge of going to Honduras and playing against a talented team, but we are excited about the opportunity that we have," Bradley said.
"Ideally," he added, "we can finish up things Saturday."
Dempsey injured his shoulder playing for England's Fulham and Bradley is still weighing his options of starting either Benny Feilhaber or Stuart Holden.
"I think those are the primary options. Stuart and Benny both have had good stretches now for our national team," Bradley said. "I think we're lucky to have both of those options."
Whoever steps into Dempsey's role will be tested, as Honduras has scored 12 at home and allowed just two in four matches.
Bradley also has decisions to make up top, where Jozy Altidore's status is up in the air due to his limited playing time at England's Hull City. Considering Altidore leads the U.S. with six goals in 2010 qualifying, it's still likely he will play some role.
"It is a concern that players aren't getting regular time," Bradley admitted.
Charlie Davies, Conor Casey, Brian Ching, Kenny Cooper and Landon Donovan, who will likely start in midfield, are options for Bradley up top.
Center back Oguchi Onyewu, who joined AC Milan this offseason, has also found it hard to earn playing time, but he did play 30 minutes in his club's last Champions League match and is a fixture in defense.
"We have confidence in Gooch and his experience," Bradley said.
Honduras will be without captain Amado Guevara, in addition to Elvis Turcios, but has an overall 8-0-0 home mark - including five shutouts - in qualifying.
The U.S. and Honduras have played four times this season, and Honduras has yet to post a win.
Despite all the scenarios, the Americans can also secure a World Cup spot with a loss by Costa Rica. With a draw, the U.S. would also clinch if Costa Rica is held to a tie by Trinidad and Tobago. Mexico plays El Salvador in the group's other match.
