Tokyo, Japan (My Sportsbook) - French stars Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils were a pair of winners Wednesday at the $1.226 million Japan Open.
The second-seeded Tsonga handled German Mischa Zverev 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round, while a fourth-seeded Monfils posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 second-round victory against Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli on the hardcourts at Ariake Colosseum. Monfils titled in Metz in his native France two weeks ago.
Tsonga's second-round opponent on Thursday will be fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who was an easy 6-3, 6-2 opening-round winner against German Philipp Petzschner.
In other Day-3 action involving seeds, Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis upended No. 6 Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-4 in round one, while No. 7 Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka waltzed past German Simon Greul 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals. Wawrinka will lock horns with Monfils on Friday.
Additional first-round wins came for Argentine Juan Monaco, Russian Mikhail Youzhny and German Andreas Beck.
The second round will conclude here on Thursday, including matches Tsonga, third-seeded Gilles Simon, reigning Tokyo champion Tomas Berdych and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt. Simon, fresh off his title in Bangkok last week, will meet Youzhny, while a fifth-seeded Berdych, who topped reigning U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in last year's final here, will encounter Beck, and an eighth-seeded Hewitt, who titled in Tokyo in 2001, will tangle with 36- year-old crafty Frenchman Fabrice Santoro.
The 2009 Tokyo champ will claim $300,000.
