The 34-year-old made 113 Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich and Hannover, but has failed to recover from a knee ligament injury picked up a year ago. "Valerien's injuries are no longer treatable and the continuation of his career as a professional footballer is impossible," said the club doctor.
