49ers rout winless Rams

San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - Shaun Hill threw two touchdown passes and the 49ers scored twice on defense and once on special teams to come away with a 35-0 blowout victory over lowly St. Louis.

Hill finished with 152 yards on 14-of-24 attempts and hit Vernon Davis and Josh Morgan for TDs in a dominating second half for San Francisco (3-1), which rebounded from last week's heartbreaking 27-24 loss to Minnesota.

Rookie Glen Coffee rushed for a team-high 75 yards on 24 carries and added 39 receiving yards on four catches in the absence of Frank Gore (ankle).

"The most important thing for us right now is to win the division, but as we go forward we want to be one of the best teams in the NFL. That's where we want to go. Obviously we have a lot of work to do, but that's where our sights are," 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said.

Kyle Boller got the starting nod behind center for St. Louis (0-4) due to Marc Bulger being unable to play (shoulder). The backup had a forgettable game, completing 13-of-24 passes for 108 yards and throwing an interception that Patrick Willis returned for a touchdown.

"I think we have a great team," Boller said. "I have all the confidence in the world in all our guys. Those guys work really hard every day. Certain things you can do, doesn't matter what size you are or how fast you are. We've got to focus on the little things, the details."

Steven Jackson gained 79 yards on 23 carries for the Rams, who have scored just 24 points through their first four games and own the league's longest current losing streak at 14.

Both offenses mustered just five first downs in the opening 30 minutes, which featured one score on special teams.

Punting late in the second quarter, San Francisco caught a break when the ball bounced around and hit an unsuspecting Quincy Butler in the leg. Butler tried to recover the ball as it caromed into the end zone, but San Francisco linebacker Scott McKillop fought for the recovery and was credited for the TD.

The 49ers finally got something going on their second touch out of the break. Morgan caught a 15-yard pass on 3rd-and-8 from the St. Louis 30, and Davis followed two plays later with a 13-yard reception in the back of the end zone.

On the third play of the ensuing drive, Willis stepped in front of Boller's pass intended for Keenan Burton and returned the pick 23 yards for a score with 5:31 to play in the third quarter.

While continuing to stymie the Rams' makeshift offense, the hosts made it 28-0 on the second play of the final stanza, as Morgan came down with a 24-yard score between a pair of defenders.

Two plays later the Rams epitomized their ugly start to the season, as Boller and Danny Amendola botched an end around exchange, allowing Ray McDonald to scoop up the loose ball and rumble 11 yards for another defensive TD.

The only worthwhile drive for either team in the first quarter ended when St. Louis' Josh Brown missed a 51-yard field goal.

Joe Nedney followed suit by hitting a 43-yard attempt off the left upright with roughly 10 minutes remaining in the second to keep it a scoreless affair.

Game Notes
