Santa Clara, CA (My Sportsbook) - The San Jose Earthquakes and New York Red Bulls square off in a battle of the bottom feeders in a Major League Soccer clash on Saturday night.
New York has the worst record in MLS and is the last-placed team in the East, while San Jose is the last-placed team in the West.
Although New York is just 4-17-6 on the season, it has just one loss in its last five, going 2-1-2 in that span, including a 1-1 draw at Chivas USA this past Saturday.
"At the end of the day, they're just doing an overall good job and that's great to see," New York interim coach Richie Williams said. "Three games left here and we're going to try to get that win that we haven't gotten in 16 months. It's not perfect but the guys are at least trying to do the right things for the most part. We make our fair share of mistakes but they make plenty of good plays too and they don't give up and have a good mentality right now."
San Jose (6-12-7) will try to stay alive for the postseason with a win, but will also need some help. If Chivas USA, Seattle and New England all win, San Jose is mathematically eliminated regardless of the outcome.
The 'Quakes are coming off a 2-1 win at D.C. United that stretched the team's unbeaten run to three games.
"We've been very close in a lot of the games this year, but we had not quite gotten it done," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said. "I'm really proud of the way we've not lost faith in the way we can play away from home. And then to see the game out against a D.C. side that was pushing forward and had chances. Obviously, they missed a couple at the end, but I thought our guys really stuck to the task at hand."
San Jose will be without midfielder Darren Huckerby, while forward Cornell Glen is doubtful and midfielders Andre Luiz and Shea Salinas are questionable with injuries.
New York will be without midfielders Jorge Rojas and Nick Zimmerman, forward John Wolyniec and defender Carlos Mendes, while defender Walter Garcia is questionable and defender Kevin Goldthwaite is probable, all with injuries.
