Cunningham's league-leading 16th keeps Hoops' hopes alive

Dallas, TX (My Sportsbook) - FC Dallas kept its slim chances of making the 2009 Major League Soccer playoffs alive with a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution at the Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night.

Jeff Cunningham scored the game's only goal - his MLS-leading 16th of the season - in the 71st minute to propel the home side to victory.

The Hoops (9-12-6) have now won three of their last four by a combined score of 12-6, adding to their league-leading goals-scored total of 45 through 27 games.

The Revolution (10-9-7), on the other hand, have just one win in their last five with a number of injury concerns catching up with them. The latest of which is to captain Steve Ralston, who is out for the rest of the season after suffering knee injury this past weekend vs. Seattle.

The Revs appeared to try and play for a tie after packing things in the first half, which let to an uneventful opening frame. The only things of note that occurred were injuries to New England veteran defender Jay Heaps in the 10th minute and Dallas' veteran midfielder Dave van den Bergh in the 26th minute. Both were substituted out.

Things opened up slightly in the second half as Cunningham was finally able to break the stalemate. The chance was started by left winger Atiba Harris, who controlled the ball in the left corner before dishing a pass off to Jair Benitez. Benitez then played a cross into the penalty area where Cunningham dove to get his head on the ball and knock into the top left corner, past goalkeeper Matt Reis, who had no chance on the play.

Things got chippy in the closing minutes as FCD's Andre Rocha and New England's Wells Thompson were both ejected after they got tangled up during a throw-in from the right corner. Thompson was given a straight red, while Rocha earned his second yellow in just 15 minutes after coming on as a late substitute.

Dallas is now off until Oct. 7 when it travels to San Jose, while New England plays at Colorado on Saturday night in its next MLS match.
