Tokyo, Japan (My Sportsbook) - Seeded players Flavia Pennetta of Italy and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia were first-round upset victims Sunday at the $2 million Toray Pan Pacific Open. Fellow Italian Roberta Vinci defeated Pennetta, 6-1, 6-2, and Czech Lucie Safarova upended Ivanovic, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). Ivanovic was a finalist here in 2007 when she lost to Martina Hingis. There was one other match involving a seeding player on Sunday as No. 15 Li Na of China breezed past France's Alize Cornet, 6-4, 6-0. Dinara Safina beat Svetlana Kuznetsova in last year's all-Russian finale on the hardcourts at Ariake Colosseum. Safina is the top seed for this tournament and will play Taiwan qualifier Kai-Chen Chang in the second round. Chang topped Estonia's Kaia Kanepi, 6-3, 6-3, Sunday. American Venus Williams is seeded second and will play Russian qualifier Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round two. Pavlyuchenkova defeated Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) Sunday. Japanese wild card Kimiko Date Krumm, coming off a title Sunday at the Korea Open, gets right back into action on her 39th birthday Monday as she plays Canadian AlekSandra Wozniak in the first round. Date Krumm won this tournament in 1995. Other first-round winners Sunday were Germany's Sabine Lisicki and Andrea Petkovic, Russians Elena Vesnina and Alisa Kleybanova, Argentine Gisela Dulko and France's Aravane Rezai.
