Foxborough, MA (My Sportsbook) - Shalrie Joseph scored twice, including the match-winner in the 87th minute, leading the New England Revolution to a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday.
Fredy Montero scored his 12th goal of the season in the first half for Seattle but Joseph converted a penalty kick early in the second half and scored off a header in the closing minutes.
New England (10-8-7) picked up its 10th win of the season and greatly improved its playoff chances. The Revolution moved into third in the East and have five games left to play, more than all the other teams in the conference.
Seattle (9-7-11) remained three points behind second-place Los Angeles, which lost 2-0 to the Columbus Crew on Saturday, and five behind the idle Houston Dynamo but has just three games left in the regular season.
Montero got Sounders FC off to a perfect start in the sixth minute, dipping a 30-yard shot off the crossbar and in past a helpless New England goalie Matt Reis.
Seattle held the lead into half, but New England, despite losing captain Steve Ralston to injury in the first half, rallied after the break.
Sounders defender Leo Gonzalez handled a cross from Kheli Dube, who replaced Ralston, in the area to give New England a penalty. Joseph buried the penalty to the left side, giving Seattle goalie Kasey Keller no chance in the 51st.
Joseph beat Keller one more time to hand New England the victory, heading from eight yards out to the back post with three minutes left. Jeff Larentowicz and Wells Thompson assisted on the match-winner.
New England will try to build on the win Wednesday when it visits FC Dallas in the first of two matches next week. The Revolution visit the Colorado Rapids on Oct. 3 to wrap up the busy stretch.
Seattle will have a tough time bouncing back when it visits MLS overall leader and defending champion Columbus on Oct. 3.
