Hamburg, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Bayern Munich has reeled off five straight wins in all competitions, including a Champions League match, and has put its worst Bundesliga start in 43 seasons in the rearview mirror.
After opening with two losses and a tie in its first three matches, Bayern has won three straight in the league to move within three of the top spot, and can move into first Saturday when it visits first-place Hamburg.
"We want to go there and take the three points," said Bayern's Ivica Olic, who scored his second goal last week in his first season in Munich after leaving Hamburg.
Bayern, in its first season under Louis van Gaal, is three points behind both Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen entering the seventh week of the season.
The Munich club's season turned around following the signing of Arjen Robben, who joined from Real Madrid to pair with star Franck Ribery and form a dynamic tandem nicknamed "Robbery."
Robben scored twice in his debut and, although he and Ribery are still not in top form, they have turned Bayern into the clear favorite in the league and an outside contender for the Champions League.
"We're one club, and we're pulling together," said Bayern's Mario Gomez, a $30 million offseason signing from Stuttgart who has been playing behind Olic in recent weeks.
Bayern's last match was a convincing 5-0 win Tuesday in the Pokal Cup against Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, while Hamburg was dumped out of the competition by VfL Osnabruck on penalty kicks.
Defender Daniel van Buyten, another former Hamburg player, has four goals in his last three matches for Bayern. With Olic also in top form, both should be major factors this weekend.
"Players are always up for it against their former club," said Van Gaal.
Bayern is also returning to full strength, with defender Martin Demichelis back in training and Mark van Bommel close to returning.
"Everything's fine again. I have to pick up the pace now," said Demichelis.
In addition to the midweek loss, Hamburg lost in the Europa League last week and tied Eintracht in its last Bundesliga match.
Former Bayern man Ze Roberto is off to a good start at Hamburg, but he could be on the sidelines with a calf problem this week. Alex Silva (knee), Collin Benjamin (knee), Paolo Guerrero (knee), Bastian Reinhardt (broken foot) and Marcell Jansen (lack of fitness) are all not available for Hamburg, leaving the leaders in a hole for the key clash.
On Friday, Bochum edged Nurnberg 1-0.
Also Saturday, Wolfsburg hosts Hannover, Eintracht hosts Stuttgart, Werder Bremen hosts Mainz, Koln hosts Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund hosts Schalke.
On Sunday, Freiburg hosts Monchengladbach and Hoffenheim hosts Hertha Berlin.
