Columbus, OH (My Sportsbook) - The Columbus Crew host the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday in an inter-conference battle between two Major League Soccer teams that have combined for just three league losses since June 27, a span of 23 matches.
The Crew (11-4-10), are also a perfect 8-0-4 at home this season and lead the Eastern Conference table by three points over the Chicago Fire heading into the weekend fixtures. The team is actually coming off a 2-2 draw vs. the Fire in its last league fixture this past Sunday.
"Obviously it was an important game for us because [the Fire] are in second place and if we lose the game, we'll be even in points,' Crew coach Robert Warzycha said. "So it was important for us to stay ahead of them because it was a six-point swing. We are happy with the point and we were pushing for another goal but obviously, we are happy with the point."
The Crew are also tied with Houston atop the league's overall table with two games in hand, giving them a leg up in the race for the Supporter's Shield.
The Galaxy (10-5-11) are in a slightly different position. They are chasing Houston for the top spot in the West, and trail by two points with a game in hand, meaning they could pull ahead with a win on Saturday.
Los Angeles is coming off a 2-0 win over Toronto FC in its last league match this past weekend. The solid win helped the team put to rest the debacle that was its previous game, a 6-3 loss to FC Dallas.
"We beat a good team," L.A. coach Bruce Arena said. "It was a great response from last week's fiasco. The effort by our guys, the concentration, the defending, was excellent. We created some opportunities as well in this game. This was one of those games that for 90 minutes we looked like a team as opposed to last week where there were very few minutes the entire match that we looked like a team."
David Beckham registered a goal - his second in the past three games - and an assist in the win to lead his team.
"He's a person with a lot of pride, along with that outstanding ability that he has," Arena said. "He did everything he could to lead this team. I thought his performance was absolutely outstanding. You talk about a player that technically is quick, mentally is quick. He was fabulous . He had a number of attacking opportunities, and he did the defending he needed to do. And the way he got out on the break in the second half was remarkable. David gave 100 percent. No question about it, an excellent performance."
The Galaxy will be without defender Julian Valentin and forward Alecko Eskandarian, while defender A.J. DeLaGarza and midfielders Dema Kovalenko and Eddie Lewis are questionable for Saturday's match, all with injuries.
The Crew will be without backup goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and reigning defender of the year Chad Marshall because of injury.
