Tashkent, Uzbekistan (My Sportsbook) - Top seeds Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan and Shahar Peer of Israel were quarterfinal winners Friday at the Tashkent Open.
The top-seeded Shvedova rallied from a set down to beat sixth-seeded Monica Niculescu of Romania, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-2, while the second-seeded Peer was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Russian qualifier Alexandra Panova.
Shvedova will play in her second semifinal of 2009, having previously lost to Andrea Petkovic at Bad Gastein in July. Her lone WTA singles title came back in 2007 at Bangalore.
On Saturday, Shvedova will take on Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova, who thrilled the home crowd with a 6-1, 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland on Friday. Amanmuradova reached her lone WTA Tour final at this event in 2005.
Peer, coming off a title in Guangzhou, has not dropped a set in the past two weeks. After rumbling through her opposition in China, she was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Estonia's Maret Ani in the first round this week and knocked off Germany's Kathrin Woerle, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round.
Next up for Peer is fourth-seeded Olga Govortsova, who topped fellow Belarusian Darya Kustova, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, on Friday. Govortsova will play in her first semifinal of 2009 and is trying to reach a WTA final for the first time since her lone appearance last year in Memphis.
The 2009 Tashkent winner will earn $37,000.
