Midland, TX (My Sportsbook) - Fran Quinn, last week's winner in Boise, former PGA Tour winner Garrett Willis and Rhein Gibson each fired rounds of eight- under 64 on Thursday to share the opening-round lead at the WNB Classic.
Brendan Steele, Marco Dawson, Paul Stankowski, David Hearn, Fabian Gomez and 2000 PGA Championship runner-up Bob May are knotted in fourth place at minus- six at Midland Country Club.
Quinn birdied his last hole on Sunday to get the win in Boise and is taking that confidence into this week.
"Confidence is huge," said Quinn. "With grinding and trying to win so bad, and then each time I failed it took a lot out of me. Being able to convert it and get it done Sunday, now I feel like 'let's play and let's enjoy it' and I'm just trying to keep that same attitude. It was fun."
Quinn started with three birdies in his first seven holes, then parred his next four around the turn. At the par-five 12th, Quinn hit a tree and was forced to lay up with his second. He had 70 yards for his third and with soft conditions thanks to rain during the week, fired for the flag and it worked. Quinn holed the pitch shot for an eagle.
"That's stealing one there," acknowledged Quinn. "From winning last week, you just have an ease about you."
Quinn birdied three of his last five for a piece of first.
Willis was only two-under after the turn, but caught fire on the back nine. He birdied three in a row from the 10th, then added his fourth of the second side with a birdie at 14.
Willis tallied back-to-back birdies at his last two for a back-nine 30 and a share of the lead.
"If you can keep it in the fairway here you're going to give yourself a lot of chances," said Willis. "You might not make all the putts I made today but at least you give yourself chances to make birdies."
Gibson, a Monday qualifier, started at No. 10 on Thursday and recorded three birdies on his first nine. He flew out of the gate on the second side with three straight birdies and an eagle.
That run sent Gibson into a share of first and he parred out to stay atop the leaderboard.
This 64 was an extension of great play from Gibson as he shot a 62 in the Monday qualifying.
"It's tough to follow up one good round with another, and obviously this is a much tougher course," said Gibson. "I just hit the ball solid. Pretty much wherever I tried to hit it, I hit it. To be honest, I would have taken anything under par today."
Bryan DeCorso, Jerod Turner, Adam Bland, Guy Boros, Kris Cox and Steven Taylor are knotted in 10th place at five-under 67.
