Line of Scrimmage: Week 3 - Vick still traveling long road back

MySportsbook.com - Online Sportsbook, Casino & Racebook
Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - NFL records will reflect that Michael Vick, about to suit up for the Philadelphia Eagles' Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, will be wearing a uniform in a meaningful game for the first time since Dec. 31, 2006.

Those records will not show when, or if, Vick will ever get all the way back.

When Vick entered Lincoln Financial Field on that New Year's Eve back in '06, he was the franchise quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, one of the league's most dynamic and visible players, a testament to the evolution of athleticism that the NFL had encountered in the past couple of decades.

More than two-and-a-half years later, at the age of 29, Vick is something different altogether.

At this stage, from a football standpoint, he's a gimmick, albeit an athletic one. The Eagles will run him out wide, put him in the slot, in the backfield, maybe even let him take a couple of snaps under center here and there to keep defenses off-balance. They won't count on him to be their every-down quarterback unless something drastic happens, and even then, he won't be their every-down signal-caller for very long.

The first quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in a season won't have the ball in his hands enough to repeat that achievement as an Eagle, even if his body would cooperate long enough for him to do so, which is debatable given his age and time away.

But Vick's fall from grace is about so much more than football.

For a large segment of the public, he'll forever be a character of ill repute, no matter how many classrooms he gives speeches in, or how many PSAs he does for the Humane Society.

The specifics of the crimes for which Vick was sent to federal prison for 18 months have already been obscured a great deal by the bigger picture, which is interpreted by most to say that Vick is a bad person, who surrounded himself with other bad people, who joined him in harming animals in the interests of leisure and financial gain.

Though disgusted by his acts, most reasonable people feel that after paying his debt to society, Vick should be permitted to play in the NFL again. This thinking has as much to do with the NFL as it does Vick, and not in a good way. You won't find a team roster in the league that doesn't feature multiple criminals - past, present, and future - the thinking goes, so what's one more miscreant?

And that's the message that will ultimately resonate from this entire episode, a message that is nothing new but is a little more profound when its courier is someone who we had come to recognize so easily: there are heroes in the NFL, and heroes throughout all of sports, but none are heroes BECAUSE they play in the NFL, or because they play sports.

The guy wearing number seven for Philadelphia this week is just a football player, someone who should not be admired, though his athletic skills can be.

Michael Vick is back, but he's also gone forever.

Let's take a look at the week that will be in the National Football League:

SUICIDE POOL PIX

1. Baltimore (vs. Cleveland) - Ravens won't be hearing any questions about the strength of their defense after this one.

2. Philadelphia (vs. Kansas City) - Bad week for the Chiefs to have to go into Philly, where the Eagles were humiliated by the Saints last Sunday.

3. N.Y. Giants (at Tampa Bay) - Even without Justin Tuck, the Giants are going to harass Byron Leftwich from start to finish.

THE GAMES

I was 8-8 in my picks last week, also going 8-8 against the spread to follow up a strong Week 1 with a clunker. The best thing I did was picking a couple of very mild upsets, with the Ravens and Saints both winning on the road. The record for the year is now 20-12 (.625) straight-up, and 19-13 (.594) with Vegas involved.

Cleveland (0-2) at Baltimore (2-0), Sunday, 1:00 (Baltimore -13)

Storylines: Cleveland still seeking its first win of the Eric Mangini era... Ravens trying to start 3-0 for the first time since 2006, when they won their first four en route to a 13-3 finish...Browns attempting to avoid their third 0-3 start in the past four seasons...Ravens running back Willis McGahee is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (4) along with the Vikings' Adrian Peterson and 49ers' Frank Gore...Browns are last in NFL total offense (234 yards per game) and third-down percentage (23.1)...Baltimore leads the NFL in rushing defense (41 yards per game), and has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 37 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the NFL...Browns have allowed a league-high five rushing touchdowns...Ravens cornerback Fabian Washington (head) is doubtful for Sunday...Baltimore signed free agent tight end Tony Curtis (ex-Eagles) on Tuesday...Browns waived tight end Martin Rucker earlier this week and signed former Jaguars tight end Greg Estandia.

Fast Fact: The last opposing running back to gain 100 yards on the Ravens was Larry Johnson, who recorded 120 yards on 23 carries in the Chiefs' 20-10 loss to Baltimore on Dec. 10, 2006.

Prediction: Ravens played down to their opponent for most of Week 1 win over the Chiefs, and will do the same against another inferior foe. Ravens 23, Browns 12.

---

Washington (1-1) at Detroit (0-2), Sunday, 1:00 (Washington -6)

Storylines: Lions seeking to end a 19-game losing streak dating back to 2007, and to earn their first win of the Jim Schwartz/Matthew Stafford era... Redskins have scored just one offensive touchdown in their first eight quarters of play, and have scored 13 points or fewer in seven of their last 10 games dating back to last season...Lions are last in NFL scoring defense (36 points per game), touchdown passes allowed (8), and are allowing opponents to complete a league-high 80.6 percent of their passes...Linebacker Ernie Sims (knee) is out for the Lions, and end Cliff Avril (hamstring) is considered questionable...Redskins placed starting guard Randy Thomas (triceps) on season-ending injured reserve earlier this week, and re-signed running back Anthony Aldridge... Fast Fact: San Francisco is 0-3 in Minnesota since last winning there in 1992, and has lost its three games there by an average of 19.7 points.

Prediction: Vikings will make Favre's home opener a happy one, but there's no reason to believe the 49ers won't hang. Vikings 20, 49ers 17.
