Seoul, Korea (My Sportsbook) - Top-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova was an opening-round winner, while second-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues came up a second-round victor Wednesday at the $220,000 Korea Open. The world No. 21 Hantuchova held off Japan's Ayumi Morita 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the second round, while Medina Garrigues drilled American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 6-1 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals at the Olympic Tennis Courts. Hantuchova's second-round opponent on Thursday will be South African Chanelle Scheepers, while Medina Garrigues will face Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova in Friday's quarters. Second-round upsets came when Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei took down sixth-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 and the aforementioned Rybarikova toppled eighth-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-1, 7-5. One other second-round result saw German Anna-Lena Groenefeld defeat qualifier Kai-Chen Chang of Chinese Taipei 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3, while one other first-rounder had 38-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date Krumm leveling South Korean wild card Ye-Ra Lee 6-3, 6-4.
