Seoul, Korea (My Sportsbook) - Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues and Italy's Francesca Schiavone were among the winners in the first round of the Korea Open, while fourth-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania was sent home.
Medina Garrigues, the second seed, cruised past Germany's Andrea Petkovic, 6-3, 6-4, while the third-seeded Schiavone was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Japanese qualifier Yurika Sema.
Cirstea, the fourth seed, was an upset victim as Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld pulled off a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3 triumph. Groenefeld, a former top-20 player currently ranked 77th, avenged a loss to Cirstea last month in Cincinnati.
Other seeded first-round winners on Tuesday were Russians Alisa Kleybanova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Vera Dushevina, as well as Austria's Sybille Bammer. Bammer, the eighth seed, denied an all-Russian sweep of those matches with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Ekaterina Makarova.
The fifth-seeded Kleybanova eased past Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik, 6-2, 6-3, while the sixth-seeded Pavlyuchenkova notched a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over American Angela Haynes. Dushevina, the seventh seed, toppled Poland's Urszula Radwanska, 6-3, 6-1.
Other unseeded winners on a busy day were Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova, Russia's Maria Kirilenko, Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, American Meghann Shaughnessy, Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa and Yung-jan Chan and Kai-chen Chang of Chinese Taipei.
The top seed is Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova, who will take on Japan's Ayumi Morita on Wednesday.
