Seattle, WA (My Sportsbook) - Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton posted his second straight shutout Saturday, and this time he earned it.
Thornton, who didn't make a single save in a win against the New England last week, made six saves against Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field to help 10-man Chivas earn a huge road point with a 0-0 draw.
Chivas (11-9-4) remained one point behind Seattle (9-6-11) in the West, and is in better position down the stretch with two fewer matches played.
Thornton, who has 10 shutouts this season, started his impressive performance with a point-blank stop on Seattle's Sebastien Le Toux and ended it by denying Fredy Montero on a one-on-one chance.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Thornton stopped Le Toux on a well-hit, six-yard shot in the 15th minute with a lightning-quick reaction to knock the ball just over the bar.
Although he wasn't very busy the remainder of the opening half, Thornton did a great job frustrating Seattle after the break.
Seattle's Steve Zakuani and Freddie Ljungberg were denied by Thornton on back- to-back shots in the 49th minute. Zakuani tested Thornton first with a header that was deflected and Ljungberg was unable to sneak the open rebound past the Chivas goalie.
Montero tried to beat Thornton on a bicycle kick in the 60th, but fired just a few feet wide of the left post. Montero was kicked in the neck just 10 minutes later by Marcelo Saragosa, and the ensuing red card left Chivas short-handed.
After Ljungberg fired inches wide of the right post in the 74th, Montero crept into open space in the 83rd and had Thornton as his mercy, but the goalie made himself big and made another save to preserve the shutout. Chivas then held on through nearly five minutes of stoppage time.
Chivas will try to build on the draw when it hosts Red Bull New York on Sept. 26. Seattle visits New England on Sept. 26.
