Santa Clara, CA (My Sportsbook) - The Colorado Rapids earned a valuable road point at the San Jose Earthquakes thanks to a controversial penalty kick call by referee Edvin Jurisevic in second-half stoppage time.

With the 'Quakes clinging to a 1-0 advantage, a scramble for a loose ball in the San Jose penalty area led to a number of players hitting the pitch, but Jurisevic ruled that there was an infraction, which led to the call.

Conor Casey stepped up and drilled the chance by San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon for his league-leading 14th goal of the season to help his team earn a 1-1 draw and a share of the points.

With the draw, Colorado (10-8-7) improves its playoff chances, although it has just one more point than Chivas USA, which has two games in hand.

San Jose took the early lead in the game thanks to a Ryan Johnson goal in the eighth minute. Brandon McDonald started the chance with a long throw-in from the right side into the Colorado penalty area. Johnson got his head on the throw and knocked the ball over the head of rapids goalkeeper Preston Burpo for the 1-0 advantage.

San Jose (5-12-6) will try to earn the full points in a rematch at Colorado on Wednesday in the next MLS fixture for both teams.
