Liege, Belgium (My Sportsbook) - Arsenal overcame a two-goal deficit in the opening five minutes to record a 3-2 win over Standard Liege in the opening match of Champions League Group H play on Wednesday.
Goals from Eliaquim Mangala and Milan Jovanovic put the hosts up 2-0 inside of five minutes, but Nicklas Bendtner pulled one back for the Gunners right before halftime, and after a controversial goal from Thomas Vermaelen in the 78th minute leveled the match, Eduardo scored the game-winner for Arsenal with nine minutes to play.
The visitors were starting their third-choice goalkeeper, Vito Mannone, after injuries made their top two netminders unavailable, and it didn't take long for Mannone to be picking the ball out of his own net.
A terrible clearance by Eduardo less than two minutes into the game handed the ball to Mangala near the top of the box and he fired a low shot past Mannone and inside the right post.
The Gunners were again at fault minutes later when a giveaway in midfield allowed Jovanovic to carry the ball into the box before being tripped up by Arsenal defender William Gallas, giving the hosts a penalty kick.
Jovanovic picked himself up and easily beat the keeper from the spot as he sent Mannone the wrong way, making it 2-0.
The Belgian side could not have asked for a better start, but they gave a goal back right before halftime as Abou Diaby slipped a ball into the area for Bendtner and he rolled his shot between the legs of the goalkeeper and inside the far post.
Arsenal's attack struggled most of the day against the Standard Liege defense, but they used a bit of luck in the 78th minute to pull themselves level.
A free kick was swung into the center of the box from the left wing and flicked on towards the back post for Alexandre Song, who appeared to be well offsides.
However, the flag stayed down, and after the ball struck Song's arm, it fell into the path of Vermaelen, who bundled it home from close range.
Eduardo nearly put the Gunners ahead one minute later when he forced goalkeeper Bolat to make a good reaction stop from eight yards, but the Croatian would not be denied in the 81st minute when he redirected a corner kick past the keeper from in front of goal.
The other match in Group H saw Olympiakos claim a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar as the Greek side got a goal from Vassilis Torosidis in the 79th minute to join Arsenal with three points at the top of the group.
Group F favorites Barcelona and Inter Milan played to a 0-0 draw at the San Siro, while Dynamo Kyiv took the lead in the group with a 3-1 win over Rubin as Atanda Yussuf, Gerson Magrao and Oleg Gusev scored goals in the last 20 minutes for Dynamo.
Liverpool started its Champions League campaign in successful fashion as the Reds beat Hungarian side Debrecen, 1-0, with Dirk Kuyt scoring the game's lone goal right before halftime. Lyon also recorded a 1-0 win as they downed 10-man Fiorentina. Alberto Gilardino was sent off for the Italian club in the 45th minute, and Lyon took advantage with a goal from Miralem Pjanic 15 minutes from time.
Sevilla took the lead in Group G with a 2-0 home victory over Unirea with goals from Luis Fabiano and Renato, while Rangers and Stuttgart played to a 1-1 draw in Germany as Madjid Bougherra's goal in the 77th minute for Rangers canceled out Pavel Pogrebnyak's first-half opener.
