New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Rachel Alexandra, undefeated this year in eight starts, maintained the top overall position in the latest NTRA Thoroughbred Poll. The three-year-filly has been in first-place for two months.
Owned by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick, Rachel Alexandra received 189 total points while getting 18 of 19 first-place votes. Five-year-old mare Zenyatta received the lone remaining first-place vote and continues in second- place with 170 points.
Rachel Alexandra, trained by Steve Asmussen, defeated older male horses on September 5 in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga. Earlier this year she won the Kentucky Oaks, Preakness Stakes, Mother Goose and Haskell Invitational. This year, with Calvin Borel her rider, she has earnings of $2.7 million.
Last Friday the Breeders' Cup Board authorized an increase of $1 million to the winner's share of the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on November 7 if Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra both start in the 1 1/4 mile race.
Adding the $1 million would raise the base winner's share of the Classic from $2.7 million to $3.7 million.
However, Jess Jackson is adamant that his filly will not race this year in the Breeders' Cup World Championships on Santa Anita's synthetic surface.
"My concerns are well known about the tracks in California," Jackson said. . "These false tracks create potential for injury, a risk that I am not willing to take with Rachel. Bottom line, despite an increase in purses, she will not race at the Breeders' Cup this year.
"Rachel has already completed a brilliant and long campaign. And as I said after the Woodward, she deserves a rest."
Arlington Million winner Gio Ponti remains in third-place in the poll with Belmont and Travers champ Summer Bird repeating in fourth.
Completing the top ten are Einstein, Forever Together, Macho Again, Fabulous Strike, Mine That Bird and newcomer Zensational.
