Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) -
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Donovan McNabb likely won't practice Wednesday as the quarterback deals with a fractured rib he sustained in Sunday's season-opener against Carolina.
Reid has not ruled McNabb out for this coming Sunday's home opener against New Orleans, but on Monday said Kevin Kolb would take the first-team reps in practice on Wednesday.
"He is sore," Reid said of McNabb. "He's going to try to do everything he possibly can to play this week. We'll see how it goes."
McNabb was hurt in the third quarter of the 38-10 victory while running for a touchdown. He walked off the field under his own power and left for the locker room shortly thereafter, finishing with 79 yards through the air and two touchdowns on 10-of-18 passing. He added 27 yards on the ground.
"I thought he did a great job of leading our football team [Sunday]," Reid added Monday.
McNabb returned to the sideline during the fourth quarter, but was clearly in pain.
"This one's displaced a little bit and pretty painful," Reid continued. "I know guys have played with broken ribs, [but] they're all different.
"I'm not going to put him out there in a position where he could be injured [further] or can't get out of the way or function at this level. He's a very tough guy. Sometimes you have to pull back. He always wants to play."
Kolb didn't lead the Eagles to any points during his time behind center on Sunday and threw for just 23 yards on 7-of-11 passing. He was also sacked twice.
The Eagles currently don't have a third quarterback on the active roster, as Michael Vick still has one game remaining on his suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy following his prison sentence on dogfighting charges.
Vick is on the exempt list, meaning he also can't practice with the team, but can be taken off that list to work with the club even though he is ineligible to play this Sunday.
"We haven't done anything with the position," Reid remarked. "I haven't made any decisions whether to take [Vick] off the exempt list."
The Eagles had A.J. Feeley in camp and former Eagle Jeff Garcia is available after being released by Oakland before the start of the season.
