HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (5-4) AT TORONTO ARGONAUTS (2-7)

DATE & TIME: Friday, September 11th, 7:00 p.m. (et).

GAME NOTES: For the second time in as many weeks, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts clash on the gridiron, this time mixing it up at the Rogers Centre.

Last time out the clubs battled on Hamilton's home turf, with the Ti-Cats coming up with the 34-15 win on Monday. The victory for the home team snapped what had been a brief two-game slide and moved Hamilton to 5-4 and second place in the East Division. The loss turned out to be the fifth in a row for Toronto, a squad that is deep in the division basement at 2-7.

The Argonauts actually scored the first points of the game on Monday with a three-yard touchdown run by Jamal Robertson, but from there the game belonged to the home team. Toronto went on to score a total of just eight points in the final three frames, a number exceeded by Hamilton in the second quarter alone when the squad put up 11 and took the lead for good.

Cody Pickett handled the passing chores for the Argos once again, hitting 25- of-40 for 217 yards and an interception, while Kevin Glenn converted 20-of-36 passing for Hamilton, resulting in 273 yards and two TDs.

Although he failed to make it into the end zone, Arland Bruce continued to show why he was such a valuable pick-up for the Ti-Cats, as he collected six passes for a game-high 115 yards, followed by Dave Stala who also had six catches, producing 68 yards and a score.

Even though he missed some action during his transition from one team to the next earlier this season, Bruce is easily the top receiver in the CFL with his 49 catches for 797 yards and five touchdowns. In terms of yardage alone, Bruce is 135 yards ahead of his closest competition entering Week 11 action.

Glenn, who has taken over for Quinton Porter under center for the Tiger-Cats, has completed 55 percent of his pass attempts, one of the lowest figures in the league, but he has thrown twice as many touchdowns (eight) as interceptions (four) to this point in the campaign.

From a defensive standpoint, Hamilton has two of the top three tacklers in the league in Jamall Johnson and Markeith Knowlton, who have tallied 63 and 50 stops, respectively. An area in which the duo and the rest of the Tiger-Cats could stand some improvement is getting after the quarterback, as Hamilton ranks second-to-last in the league in sacks with just 16 through nine outings.

As for the Argonauts, their defense has also seen better days. At the moment Toronto is tied with Edmonton for the most passing touchdowns allowed at 15 and yet the unit as a whole is second in the CFL in terms of yards allowed per game (326.6). Toronto has the second-fewest takeaways in the league with just 18, but because the offense has coughed up the ball a league-high 15 times on fumbles, the Argos are tied with Edmonton for the worst turnover differential (minus-13) right now.

The shuffling of quarterbacks hasn't helped the Argos much this season either, what with Pickett seeing the most action in his brief career. Put him and Kerry Joseph together and Toronto ranks second-to-last in the league in passing production with just 2,240 yards and 10 touchdowns, against 11 interceptions at the moment.

Thanks to the win just four days ago, Hamilton now owns a 116-85-2 mark in the regular season against the Argos. Toronto won the season opener for 2009 against the Tiger-Cats with a 30-17 triumph on the road, one of the team's two victories on the season.

Scoring only 18.8 ppg this season, the Argonauts appear to have hit the skids and being at home might not help them this time around.

My Sportsbook Predicted Outcome: Hamilton 27, Toronto 13

CALGARY STAMPEDERS (5-4) AT EDMONTON ESKIMOS (5-4)

DATE & TIME: Friday, September 11th, 10:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: Two of the three teams tied for first place in the West Division go at each other for the second time in as many weeks as the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Eskimos mix it up at Commonwealth Stadium this week.

On Monday the teams faced each other in Calgary, where the Stamps recorded a resounding 32-8 victory, their second in a row and the third in the last four outings. With the win Calgary moved to 5-4 and, at the same time kept the Esks from their third straight win and their sixth of the season.

The Calgary defense was hard at work in the most recent matchup, holding the visitors scoreless in both the first and third frames and allowing just two points on a pair of Noel Prefontaine singles in the second quarter of the onslaught.

On the offensive side of things, Henry Burris completed 19-of-27 passing for 285 yards and a touchdown and was picked off only once. Joffrey Reynolds, who reeled in three passes for 58 yards, also led the way on the ground with his 21 carries for 116 yards and a score. Burris chipped in with 41 yards on six rushing attempts as well.

Edmonton, which was flagged a total of 10 times in the event, generated a mere 53 yards rushing on 15 attempts, while Ricky Ray hit on 27-of-39 passing for 274 yards and a score in the setback. Arkee Whitlock posted just 36 yards as the leading rusher for the visitors.

Whitlock has had his moments this season, his first in the league, by putting up 407 yards and four touchdowns on 84 carries, but he has also fumbled the ball away four times. Whitlock has also played a key role in the passing attack for the Eskimos as well, collecting 30 passes for 262 yards and a score.

Receiver Fred Stamps, who recorded 50 catches for 751 yards and six touchdowns last season, is well on his way to surpassing all of those numbers now that he has 36 grabs for 662 yards and four scores. The 662 yards currently rank Stamps second in the league.

Completing just a shade under 70 percent of his attempts, Ray is first in the CFL in passing yards to this point in the season with his 2,672 yards, resulting in 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

On the other side of the field, Burris is coming off a 5,000-yard passing campaign in 2008 and has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in five straight seasons. Even though he is growing a bit long in the tooth, Burris has converted 62.7 percent of his attempts this season and is first in the league in passing scores with 14. More importantly, the signal-caller had just seven interceptions.

Showing up on the other end of quite a number of Burris efforts is Jeremaine Copeland who has taken nine of his 43 receptions into the end zone thus far and is one of the leading yardage gainers with 642. Even though he has less than half as many receptions he posted in 2003 when he put up 99, leading to an astonishing 1,757 yards, Copeland is just five touchdowns behind his personal high set that season.

Despite the setback in Week 10 of the season, Edmonton still maintains a commanding 121-70-3 record against Calgary during the regular season. The teams have now split a pair of meetings this year as the Eskimos took the first encounter back on August 13 by a final of 38-35.

Edmonton is tied for the best home record in the league with four wins in five tries, but after the team's most recent efforts against Calgary, the Eskimos are going to need a lot of luck just to stay close this time around.

My Sportsbook Predicted Outcome: Calgary 21, Edmonton 17

BRITISH COLUMBIA LIONS (4-5) AT MONTREAL ALOUETTES (7-2)

DATE & TIME: Sunday, September 13th, 1:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: Despite suffering their second loss (currently under protest), of the season on September 4, the Montreal Alouettes still sport the best record in the CFL as they host the British Columbia Lions at Percival Molson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Montreal is still four points ahead of its closest rival in the East Division entering Week 11 action, sporting a league-best 7-2 mark. However, last week the team was somewhat exposed as it was held to a season-low 12 points in a seven-point loss to these same Lions.

This time around BC head coach Wally Buono will be bidding for a piece of history as he shoots for his 232nd win. When they victory finally arrives for Buono it will give him the all-time record in the CFL, one more than current record holder Don Matthews.

Montreal, which has not won at BC Place since 2000, failed to score in the first quarter last week and then managed just one touchdown the rest of the way and that came on a defensive effort by Eric Deslauriers who returned a fumble 34 yards for the score to start the second quarter scoring.

Anthony Calvillo, who has been the dominant quarterback in the league so far this year, completed 18-of-29 for a hefty 294 yards, but he failed to get the team into the end zone. The same goes for running back Avon Cobourne who carried the ball 13 times for 93 yards. However, there was a moment in that game when it appeared that Cobourne had indeed made it into the end zone late in the final period.

Montreal set up to take a shot at a third-and-one play and even as the Lions appeared to have stopped the effort, the referee declared that BC had called a timeout before the play began. Consequently, the play had to be run again and this time Cobourne ran around the left side for what appeared to be a touchdown. A flag on the field signaled that the referee would not allow the play to stand because not enough time was put back on the clock following the timeout. Cobourne and the Als gave it another shot and this time they were stopped, turning the ball over on downs.

Receiver Jamel Richardson led the way with five catches for 146 yards, almost half of what Calvillo generated, and still it went for naught because of the questionable calls at the end of the contest.

Over on the other side, Jarious Jackson threw a pair of touchdowns for the Lions as he completed 17-of-30 for 217 yards, but he was just a small part of the big effort by the home team. Martell Mallett exploded for a whopping 213 yards on 21 carries and also contributed by collecting a pair of passes for another 14 yards and a score.

After nine games Mallett is now the league leader in yards from scrimmage with 994 and is fifth in the CFL with his 1,183 combined yards. Despite having found the end zone just twice on the ground thus far, Mallett has shown that he can still carry the load for the Lions coming out of the backfield now that he has 748 yards rushing on 113 attempts. With an average of 6.6 yards per carry, Mallett, who is second in total rushing yards, is one of the best in the business.

Not to be overlooked, Cobourne is third in the CFL in rushing at the moment with his 728 yards, his seven rushing touchdowns a league best as well. Cobourne is also one of only five players to have generated more than 900 yards from scrimmage, checking in with 951 to place second behind only Mallett.

Even though he failed to put a ball in the end zone for the Alouettes this past week, Calvillo is still the most dangerous passer in the game right now, having completed an amazing 72.8 percent of his attempts for 13 touchdowns and a mere four interceptions. No one in the league has a better ratio of efficiency rating.

What makes Montreal such a strong contender every time out is a defense that ranks first in the league in yards allowed per game (311.2) and points allowed (16.7 ppg).

With the questionable win last week, BC now owns a 31-27-1 regular-season record versus the Als, but you can be sure Montreal is going to use the frustration of last week's result to feed the fire that Calvillo and Cobourne need to take the bite out of the Lions this time around.

My Sportsbook Predicted Outcome: Montreal 31, British Columbia 14

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (5-4) AT WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-6)

DATE & TIME: Sunday, September 13th, 4:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: The Saskatchewan Roughriders search for their second two-game win streak of the season on Sunday afternoon as they land at Canad Inns Stadium to face off against the Winnipeg Jets for the second time in as many weeks.

This past Sunday the Roughriders, now 5-4 and locked in a three-way tie for first place in the West Division, won for the second time in the last three outings with a convincing 29-14 triumph over the Blue Bombers. For Winnipeg, the setback was the third in four tries and now has the unit showing just six points this season and in third place in the East Division as a result.

Following a single by Winnipeg's Alexis Serna, the Roughriders went to work with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, giving them a 10-point lead after 15 minutes of action and the eventual win. Wes Cates and Steven Jyles both scored rushing touchdowns for Saskatchewan, the former also picking up a game-high 76 yards on 16 attempts.

Cates was also responsible for another 84 yards through the air on six grabs, while Weston Dressler converted his four catches into 47 yards and a TD.

Over on the other side, Adarius Bowman rung up 121 yards and a TD on just five receptions and Terrence Edwards recorded another 120 yards through the air on a game-high eight catches. Running back Fred Reid, who two weeks earlier had produced a mammoth 260 yards and two TDs on just 26 carries for the Blue Bombers, was limited to a mere 41 yards on 12 attempts.

Winnipeg quarterback Michael Bishop wasn't afraid to put the ball in the air, completing 20-of-33 for a hefty 329 yards and a score, but he was also picked off three times. Altogether the Bombers turned the ball over five times, compared to just once for Saskatchewan.

Darian Durant handled the passing duties for the home team, hitting on 23- of-37 for 246 yards, one touchdown and one pick in the victory.

Now fourth in the league in passing yards with 2,079, Durant has just as many TDs (12) as he does INTs (12). Dressler continues to be the main target for Durant, having reeled in 39 balls for 641 yards, but just three touchdowns. The yardage total has Dressler ranked fifth in the league. Cates, now averaging almost five yards per carry, is seventh in the CFL with his 428 yards on the ground.

Even though he had another off day running the ball last week, Reid is still the top man in the CFL when it comes to combined yards, showing a hefty 1,446, which is nearly 200 yards more than his closest competitor. Reid ranks third in yards from scrimmage with 939 after nine games. Except for Montreal's Avon Cobourne, Reid has more carries than anyone in the league, taking 127 hand- offs and turning them into a league-leading 836 yards.

Taking into account everyone who has attempted to throw a pass this season for Winnipeg, the Blue Bombers find themselves at the bottom of the list in numerous passing categories. The squad has completed a mere 48.2 percent of its tries, leading to just 1,558 yards and only five touchdowns, all of which rank last in the CFL. Having tossed as many as 11 interceptions, the team's efficiency pass rating is a woeful 56.2, barely half of what the Montreal Alouettes have managed to create in nine games.

With last week's triumph, Saskatchewan has now taken three in a row and four of the last five meetings with the Bombers, yet it is Winnipeg that owns a commanding 103-70-3 record in regular season games all-time.

Even though Bishop gives the Blue Bombers an added dimension when he is able to scramble, the fact remains that Winnipeg still doesn't have the sort of passing attack that gets the job done on a regular basis in the Canadian Football League.

My Sportsbook Predicted Outcome: Saskatchewan 31, Winnipeg 17

Overall Season Record: 16-20; Last Week's Record: 2-2.
