Leon, Mexico (My Sportsbook) - Troy Merritt needed one playoff hole Sunday to defeat Adam Bland and win the Mexico Open.

Merritt, who shared the third-round lead, closed with a three-under 69. Bland, a two-time winner on the Canadian Tour, fired an eight-under 64 on Sunday. They finished at 15-under-par 273.

In the extra session, Merritt birdied the par-five 18th from 20 feet out to knock off Bland, who missed an eight-foot birdie putt.

"I looked at it from every angle, but I was just trying not to over-read it," said Merritt. "That's when you get into trouble. It was a double-breaker that just caught the low side and went in. It's unfortunate Adam missed that one."

Matthew Richardson ended alone in third place at 13-under-par 275 after shooting five-under 67 in the final round. Andrew Buckle (70) and Garth Mulroy (72) ended one stroke further back at minus-12 at El Bosque Golf Club.

Bland, who shared seventh place entering the final round, birdied the first, then drained three birdies in a four-hole span from the fifth to jump to minus-11.

The Australian continued his roll with a birdie on the 10th. Bland closed with birdies on 14, 16 and 18 to finish off a bogey-free round and get into the clubhouse first at minus-15.

Merritt got off to a quick start with an eagle on the first. He tripped to a bogey on three, but atoned for that mistake with a birdie on the par-four fifth.

He faltered to another bogey at seven to make the turn at minus-13. Merritt birdied the 10th, but stumbled to a bogey on the 11th. He came back with birdies on 12 and 13 to get to minus-15.

Merritt dropped a shot as he bogeyed the 14th, but managed to get into the playoff thanks to a birdie on the par-four 16th.

Steven Bowditch finished alone in sixth at 11-under-par 277 after a final- round 67. Henrik Bjornstad (65), Matt Hendrix (68), Derek Lamely (68) and Matthew Every (70) shared seventh place at minus-10.
