Flushing Meadows, NY (My Sportsbook) - Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open after Gilles Simon retired due to a right knee injury. The ninth-seeded Simon captured the first set over the 24th-seeded Ferrero, but Ferrero had taken a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 lead before the match was ended prematurely. Ferrero is through to the fourth round in New York for the first time since 2003, when he was the runner-up to Andy Roddick, who was upset by American John Isner on Saturday. The former world No. 1 will next take on either sixth- seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro or Daniel Koellerer. The third round is scheduled to conclude here on Sunday, including matches for the 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Andy Murray and former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal. The second-seeded Murray will meet American Taylor Dent, while a third-seeded Nadal, the reigning Australian Open titlist, is battling 32nd- seeded fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. Also on Sunday, seventh-seeded former Aussie Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be opposed by fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau. The 2009 U.S. Open champ will pocket at least $1.6 million.
