Crans Montana, Switzerland (My Sportsbook) - Alexander Noren carded a five- under 66 Sunday to collect his first European Tour title at the European Masters.
Noren completed the event at 20-under-par 264. This was the first event for European players to collect points towards the 2010 Ryder Cup, and the Swede jumps to the top of that list with the win.
"It feels great. The thing that was probably lacking was my short game and I've changed putters, and my caddie has been on me to practice my short game, and in the end it was all about the short game," Noren stated.
Bradley Dredge put up a strong fight but finished two back at minus-18 after a closing with a six-under 65.
Ross McGowan had a few chances to grab a share of the lead on the back nine but was never able to get over that hurdle. He ended alone in third at 17- under-par 267 after a Sunday 65.
Noren was in control throughout the front nine. He opened with back-to-back birdies before tripping to a bogey on the third. He got up and down for birdie on the short par-four fifth, then birdied the seventh to move four clear of Dredge.
"It did settle me down," Noren said of his opening birdies. "I felt good because I've never felt this good about my game."
At the eighth, Noren missed a short par putt, but he recovered that stroke with a 22-foot birdie putt on the 10th at Crans-sur-Sierre.
Dredge was making his move, though. He birdied the first, then birdied No. 7 for the fourth straight day. Dredge chipped in for eagle on the par-five ninth before making a five-foot birdie at 10.
Heading to the 11th, Noren led by one, but Dredge bladed a wedge from just off the 11th green and it rolled right into the cup for birdie.
"His short game today was unbelievable," Noren said of Dredge.
Dredge found the trees right off the tee at 12 and scrambled to a bogey, which dropped him one back. Noren missed another short par putt on 13 to fall into a share of the lead at 17-under.
However, Noren took control on the 14th. He birdied the 14th to regain the lead at 18-under. Noren then holed out for eagle from a greenside bunker on the par-five 15th to jump to 20-under.
Dredge tried to keep pace, as he drained a six-footer for birdie on 15, but both players parred the final three holes, as Noren won for the first time on the European Tour.
"I learned from last time when I was leading by one," said Noren, who lost the 54-hole lead at the 2007 Portugal Open. "All the guys were posting low rounds so I needed to post one myself."
Miguel Angel Jimenez closed with a four-under 67 to end alone in fourth at 15- under-par 269. Thongchai Jaidee was one stroke back at minus-14 after a four- under 67 Sunday.
Charl Schwartzel (71) took sixth at minus-13, while Simon Dyson (65), David Howell (67), Angelo Que (70) and Rory McIlroy (64) shared seventh at 12-under- par 272.
