Green Bay, WI (My Sportsbook) - A pair of disappointing, former highly-touted draft picks were the center of attention for the
Green Bay Packers on Saturday, as quarterback Brian Brohm was released and defensive tackle Justin Harrell sent to season-ending injured reserve as two of the team's "cut-down day" maneuvers.
Brohm was selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft after a star- studded career at Louisville, with the thought that he would begin his career as the primary backup to Aaron Rodgers. But Brohm never displayed the ability to run an NFL offense, spending all of last season as the inactive No. 3 quarterback and failing to impress during his time in the lineup during the 2009 preseason.
Harrell, the No. 16 overall pick in the 2007 draft, has played in 13 of a possible 32 regular season games due to recurring injuries. The former University of Tennessee product was sidelined after aggravating a back injury early in training camp, and has now been shut down for the season.
In addition to Brohm, the following players were released: wide receiver Jake Allen, cornerback Trevor Ford, guard/tackle Andrew Hartline, wide receiver Kole Heckendorf, linebacker Danny Lansanah, running back Kregg Lumpkin, defensive end Alfred Malone, wide receiver Ruvell Martin, tackle Jamon Meredith, nose tackle Dean Muhtadi, linebacker Cyril Obiozor, cornerback Joe Porter, tackle Dane Randolph, safety Anthony Smith, running back Tyrell Sutton, defensive end Ronald Talley and nose tackle Anthony Toribio.
Of that group, notables include Martin, who had 52 catches in 41 games played as a member of the Packers from 2006 through 2008; Meredith, a fifth-round draft pick of the team in 2009; and Smith, the former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back acquired as a free agent this past offseason.
The players joining Harrell on season-ending IR on Saturday were cornerback Pat Lee, tight end Evan Moore and safety Charlie Peprah.
Lee appeared in five games for the Pack last season, while Peprah participated in 13.
The Packers open their season on Sept. 13th, when they welcome NFC North rival Chicago to Lambeau Field for a primetime contest.
