Berea, OH (My Sportsbook) - Wide receiver David Patten and cornerback Corey Ivy were among the veterans released on Saturday by the Cleveland Browns, who excised a total of 23 players and reduced their roster to 52 members.

Patten, an offseason free agent acquisition, was attempting to resurrect his career with Cleveland after appearing in only five games as a member of the New Orleans Saints last season. But the Browns opted to go younger at the position, with 2009 draft picks Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi representing the team's future at the position, and left Patten on the outside looking in.

The 35-year-old Patten has 324 receptions, 4,715 yards through the air, and 26 touchdowns scored in a career that began with the Giants in 1997.

Also released was Ivy, who was trying to catch on as a reserve defensive back and special teams ace with the Browns. Ivy played in 45 games as a member of the Baltimore Ravens from 2006 through 2008, and appeared in every game for the team last season.

Also released on Saturday were defensive back Hamza Abdullah, fullback Charles Ali, defensive back Brandon Anderson, quarterback Richard Bartel, defensive back Tra Battle, linebacker Beau Bell, offensive lineman Branndon Braxton, linebacker Titus Brown, offensive lineman Dustin Fry, running back Noah Herron, defensive lineman Adam Hoppel, wide receiver Paul Hubbard, running back Chris Jennings, wide receiver Lance Leggett, offensive lineman Pat Murray, wide receiver Jordan Norwood, offensive lineman Kurt Quarterman, defensive lineman Brian Schaefering, offensive lineman Isaac Sowells, defensive lineman Santonio Thomas and tight end Aaron Walker.

Of that group, notables include Ali, who played in 15 games with four starts last season; Bell, the team's 2008 fourth-round draft choice; Sowells, who appeared in all 16 games as a backup last season; and Thomas, who participated in 11 contests, with one start, a season ago.

Cleveland will open its season on Sept. 13, when it plays host to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.
