Renton, WA (My Sportsbook) - Brian Russell and D.D. Lewis, a pair of one-time starting members of the Seattle Seahawks defense, were among the players released when the team established its 53-man roster on Saturday.

Russell started every game for the Seahawks over the past two seasons, but may have been deemed expendable when the team, according to NFL.com, signed Lawyer Milloy to a one-year deal on Saturday. The 31-year-old Russell has 16 interceptions in seven season spent with the Vikings (2002-04), Browns (2005-06) and Seahawks (2006-07).

Lewis played 62 games in two different stints with the Seahawks (2002-06, 2008), also playing in 2007 as a member of the Denver Broncos. But a revamped linebacking corps, one that now includes first-round draft choice Aaron Curry at one of the outside spots, may have conspired in keeping the 30-year-old Lewis on the outside looking in.

Also released on Saturday were Jamar Adams, defensive end Baraka Atkins, kicker Brandon Coutu, guard Brian De La Puente, cornerback Marquis Floyd, tackle Na'Shan Goddard, safety Courtney Greene, wide receiver Mike Hass, cornerback Kevin Hobbs, wide receiver Jordan Kent, fullback David Kirtman, running back Devin Moore, cornerback Nate Ness, tight end Joe Newton, wide receiver Logan Payne, linebacker Dave Philistin, tackle Andre Ramsey, tackle William Robinson, quarterback Jeff Rowe, wide receiver Courtney Taylor, and guard Cory Withrow.

Of that group, notables include Atkins, who appeared in nine games with the Seahawks last season; Coutu, who lost out in a training camp competition with incumbent Olindo Mare; and Kent, Payne, and Taylor, three of the many receivers the Seahawks employed last season.

If reports of his signing are accurate, Milloy brings to Seattle a reputation as one of the NFL's surest tacklers and hardest hitters. the 35-year-old, four-time Pro Bowler was released after three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (2006-08) this past offseason, and has also played for the Patriots (1996-2002) and Bills (2003-05).

Milloy played for Seahawks head coach Jim Mora when both were in Atlanta in 2006.

The Seahawks will open the regular season on Sept. 13, when they play host to the NFC West rival St. Louis Rams.
