Englewood, CO (My Sportsbook) - Defensive linemen Tim Crowder and Nic Clemons were among the players listed on the
Denver Broncos' final list of cuts, while veteran end Vonnie Holliday was added to the roster as the team established its 53-man roster.
Crowder, the team's second-round choice in the 2007 draft, and Clemons, a 16- game starter last season, were caught on the wrong side of a shifting defensive philosophy for the Broncos. Denver is transitioning from what was largely a 4-3 scheme under Mike Shanahan to a primarily 3-4 front under new head coach Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.
Enter the 33-year-old Holliday, an experienced veteran capable of playing end in a three-man front. The former first-round pick of the Packers has started 141 games as a member of Green Bay (1998-2002), Kansas City (2003-04) and Miami (2005-08), and played in every game for a Dolphins squad that won the AFC East a year ago. Holliday has 55 career sacks in 11 NFL seasons.
Released along with Crowder and Clemons on Saturday were tight end Marquez Branson, cornerback Tony Carter, guard Mitch Erickson, safety Vernon Fox, cornerback D.J. Johnson, linebacker Braxton Kelley, defensive lineman Everette Pedescleaux, defensive back Antwain Spann, running back Darius Walker, and wide receiver Matt Willis.
Notables among that group included Fox, who played in 10 games last season, starting three; Spann, who appeared in 19 games as a member of the Patriots from 2006 to 2008, and Walker, who was bidding to make the roster as a backup running back after rushing for 264 yards as a Houston Texan in 2007.
In another Saturday move, the Broncos waived/injured cornerback Joshua Bell, who played in nine games, with five starts, a year ago.
On Friday, the team released defensive lineman Matthias Askew, offensive lineman Kory Lichtensteiger, quarterback Ingle Martin, cornerback Rashod Moulton, offensive lineman Clint Oldenburg, defensive tackle Carlton Powell, linebacker Lee Robinson, wide receiver Nate Swift, defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, and placed offensive lineman Matt McChesney on season-ending injured reserve.
Denver will begin its regular season on Sept. 13, when it opens the Josh McDaniels era in Cincinnati.
