Charlotte, NC (My Sportsbook) - Veteran safety Kevin Kaesviharn was among the 23 players trimmed from the Carolina Panthers roster on Saturday, as the team reached the 53-player NFL maximum.

Kaesviharn, a former starter with the Cincinnati Bengals (2001-06) and New Orleans Saints (2007-08), fell victim to a numbers game at the safety position for Carolina. The product of Division II Augustana (SD), who had signed with the Panthers on Aug. 24th, posted 62 tackles and a pair of interceptions for the Saints last season.

Also released by the team on Saturday were wide receiver Larry Beavers, running back DeCori Birmingham, defensive lineman Casper Brinkley, offensive lineman Patrick Brown, quarterback Hunter Cantwell, wide receiver Jason Chery, safety Paul Chiara, defensive back D.J. Clark, tight end Andrew Davie, defensive tackle Marlon Favorite, defensive back Joe Fields, offensive lineman Justin Geisinger, offensive lineman Keith Gray, linebacker Anthony Heygood, defensive tackle George Hypolite, linebacker Mortty Ivy, running back Jamall Lee, linebacker Jeremy Leman, wide receiver Kevin McMahan, wide receiver Marcus Monk, offensive lineman Jonathan Palmer, and linebacker Kelvin Smith.

Notables among that group include Cantwell, who was bidding to make the team as a third quarterback; Geisinger, who appeared in four games with the team last season; and Smith, a former member of the active roster with the Miami Dolphins.

In another move, the Panthers moved third-round rookie defensive tackle Corvey Irvin to injured reserve with a knee injury suffered in the preseason.

The Panthers open the regular season on Sept. 13, when they'll play host to the Philadelphia Eagles.
