San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - Guard Kynan Forney and tackle L.J. Shelton were among 21 players released by the San Diego Chargers on Saturday, as part of the team's "cut-down day" maneuvers.

Forney, who started 89 games as a member of the Atlanta Falcons between 2001 and 2007, was bidding to win the team's starting right guard spot, but could not beat out rookie Louis Vasquez or stick as a backup.

Shelton played in all 16 games for the Chargers a year ago, starting two, but the former first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals was deemed expendable as well. The ex-Eastern Michigan star also spent time in the league with the Cardinals (1999-2004), Browns (2005), and Dolphins (2006-07).

Also released on Saturday were linebacker Eric Bakhtiari, wide receiver Gary Banks, linebacker Darry Beckwith, cornerback Simeon Castille, tackle Corey Clark, defensive end Andre Coleman, tight end Charles Davis, guard Ray Feinga, defensive end Keith Grennan, linebacker James Holt, defensive tackle Rashaad Jackson, fullback Billy Latsko, wide receiver Charly Martin, center Ryan McDonald, running back Kestahn Moore, defensive lineman Ian Scott, cornerback Antonio Smith, punter Truman Spencer and tight end Kory Sperry.

Notables among that group included Scott, a former starter with the Chicago Bears who appeared in four games with San Diego a season ago.

In other moves, San Diego placed defensive end Ryon Bingham on season-ending injured reserve due to a triceps injury. Bingham played in all 48 regular season games as a member of the Chargers from 2006 through 2008.

San Diego will open its season on Sept. 14, when it travels to meet the Oakland Raiders in a primetime contest.
