Pebble Beach, CA (My Sportsbook) - Defending champion Jeff Sluman opened with a seven-under 65 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after one round of the Wal- Mart First Tee Open.
Sluman carded his 65 on the Del Monte Golf Course, which hosts one of the first two rounds with the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Last week's winner Loren Roberts posted a 66 and shares second with Olin Browne. They both played Del Monte on Friday.
Mark O'Meara is the only player in the top five that played Pebble Beach on Friday. He shot a five-under 67 and is tied for fourth with Tom Kite.
Sluman started on the back nine and birdied three of his first four holes. He turned in minus-four thanks to a birdie on the par-five 17th.
Around the turn, Sluman parred six of the first seven holes to go with a birdie on No. 5. He closed with back-to-back birdies to post a bogey-free round of 65.
Roberts also started on No. 10. After birdies on 11 and 13, he birdied three of four holes from the 15th to make the turn in five-under. Roberts birdied the third, but gave that right back as he bogeyed the fourth. He grabbed a share of second thanks to a birdie on the eighth.
Browne carded birdies on one and two to get his round going. After a birdie at five, he parred the next five holes. Browne dropped in a birdie effort on 11 and came right back with a birdie at the 12th.
The 50-year-old posted his final birdie on the par-four 16th to share second place.
John Cook, Nick Price, Scott Simpson and David Eger all shot four-under 68 at Del Monte to share sixth place with Mark McNulty and Gene Jones, who posted their 68s at Pebble Beach.
U.S. Senior Open champion Fred Funk, JELD-WEN Tradition winner Mike Reid, Senior PGA Champion Michael Allen and Greg Norman are among seven players tied for 12th at minus-three.
