San Antonio, TX (My Sportsbook) - Becky Hammon scored 29 points, including nine in the two overtime sessions, as the Silver Stars responded after blowing a 16-point lead to edge the Lynx, 84-82, in a crucial Western Conference battle with playoff implications.
Vickie Johnson added 17 points for San Antonio, which now holds a one game lead over Minnesota for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West. With a 3-1 record against the Lynx, the Silver Stars also hold the crucial tiebreaker between the two teams with just four games remaining on the schedule.
Candice Wiggins scored 19 points for the Lynx, who trailed, 23-7, early in the second quarter before battling back. Nicky Anosike added 18 points, while Renee Montgomery had 15 in a losing effort.
The game entered overtime after both teams failed on several possessions down the stretch in the fourth. In the first extra session, neither team led by more than two points. The Silver Stars had a 73-71 lead with 1:40 on the clock, but Montgomery tied the game with a layup, and two Anosike free throws with 53.9 seconds left put the Lynx ahead.
Johnson made it 75-75 with a jump shot nine seconds later for San Antonio, and the game needed two extra sessions to decide the outcome.
Hammon's jump shot with 1:47 left in second overtime gave the Silver Stars an 81-80 lead, after Roneeka Hodges' three temporarily put Minnesota ahead. Ann Wauters added two free throws a minute later to give San Antonio a three-point edge, and Wiggins could only make 1-of-2 free throws for Minnesota to cut the deficit to 83-81. Tasha Humphrey had a chance to tie the game for the Lynx with 10.8 seconds left, but she made only 1-of-2 from the line as well.
Hammon's free throw with 8.9 seconds left gave the Silver Stars a two-point edge, and Montgomery missed a running jump shot in the final second to end the game.
