Allen Park, MI (My Sportsbook) - The Detroit Lions signed quarterback Brooks Bollinger on Tuesday after also revealing that signal-caller Drew Stanton visited noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews for an arthroscopic procedure.

Stanton hurt his knee during Saturday's preseason game against Indianapolis.

In addition to Stanton's injury, Daunte Culpepper needed eight stitches to close a minor cut on his toe after an accident at his home on Saturday. The injury is not considered serious, but he did not practice Monday and his status for Thursday's preseason finale against Buffalo has not been determined.

Culpepper is battling first overall pick Matthew Stafford for the starting quarterback job.

"He hasn't been ruled out for anything," Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said on Monday. "Obviously he's sore right now. You get those disposable stitches that can get desensitized pretty quickly, so we'll just have to wait and see where that is."

Bollinger spent last season with the Dallas Cowboys and appeared in two games, completing 10-of-17 passes for 71 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He started one game in two seasons with Minnesota and started nine games for the New York Jets in 2005.

The 29-year-old Wisconsin product has completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 2,226 with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions in six NFL seasons. He spent his first three years with the Jets.

Detroit also released guard Terrence Metcalf.
