Hur wins playoff for maiden LPGA Tour title

North Plains, OR (My Sportsbook) - M.J. Hur birdied the second playoff hole Sunday to defeat Suzann Pettersen and Michele Redman and win the Safeway Classic at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

With Redman knocked out of the playoff, Hur and Pettersen made it to the par- four 17th. Hur came up short of the green in the left rough, while Pettersen nearly drove into a creek.

Hur pitched to seven feet and Pettersen launched her chip 20 feet past the stick. Pettersen missed her birdie effort and that opened the door for a Hur victory.

The LPGA Tour rookie drained the putt for her first tour win, then ran away to avoid the traditional first-title celebration - a champagne shower.

But for Hur, it was a well-earned championship.

"I'm working very hard," said Hur, who pocketed $255,000 for the victory. "Before this tournament, I went to Korea, but I practiced a lot. That's why I had a good score this tournament."

Hur fired a seven-under 65 on Sunday. She finished at 13-under 203 and was matched by Pettersen and Redman, who both had 67s in the final round. The trio headed to a playoff, just the third this season on the LPGA Tour.

On the first extra hole, the par-four 18th, all three players found the fairway off the tee. Redman's second came up 25 feet short, Hur missed the putting surface left and Pettersen hit a great shot to 10 feet.

Hur chipped five feet short of the stick, while Redman hit a good putt that wouldn't break to the hole. Pettersen had the putt to win, but her try died at the hole.

Hur made her gutsy five-footer, but Redman, who hasn't won on tour since 2000, yanked a slightly longer than two-footer to eliminate herself from the playoff. Pettersen tapped in and with Hur, moved to No. 17.

It was at the 17th that Hur walked off with her first LPGA Tour title.

Michelle Wie (66), Ai Miyazato (70) and Seon Hwa Lee (70) shared fourth place at 11-under 205.

In regulation, the championship seemed like it was headed to Pettersen, who hasn't hoisted a trophy since a five-win 2007 campaign.

Pettersen built a three-shot lead with four straight birdies from the 10th, but a bogey at 14 cut her cushion to a shot over Hur, who was seven-under through seven holes around the turn.

Redman stayed at 12-under after a birdie at the par-five eighth, but she was still in the mix.

Pettersen, now at 14-under for the championship sailed her third well over the green at the par-five 15th. Her fourth came up short of the green and her par chip ran six feet past the hole. Pettersen missed that putt for a double-bogey that gave Hur a one-shot lead over Pettersen and Redman.

Hur hit an amazing tee ball to three feet at 16, but missed the birdie effort. It would've given her a two-stroke cushion, but she parred out to get into the clubhouse at minus-13.

At the short, par-four 17th, both Pettersen and Redman converted easy birdie tries to match Hur at 13-under par. Redman made a fairly routine par at the last to punch her ticket to the playoff, but Pettersen had a difficult road to the extra session.

Pettersen's drive at the 18th nearly found water, but she stayed above ground. She had no choice but to lay up with her second, then hit her third to 10 feet. Pettersen needed to hole the putt to make the playoff and the No. 6 player in the world did just that.

Then, it was off to the sudden-death playoff, which Hur won.

Second-round leader Anna Nordqvist shot an even-par 72 on Sunday and took seventh at 10-under 206.

Paige Mackenzie (66), Christina Kim (69) and Angela Stanford (70) shared eighth at minus-nine.

Last year's winner Cristie Kerr managed an even-par 72 and tied for 20th at five-under 211.
