New Haven, CT (My Sportsbook) - Second-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki defeated Russian Elena Vesnina in the final of the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis event, a final U.S. Open tune-up. The final was supposed to have been played outdoors on the hardcourts at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, but instead the tournament moved inside due to persistent rain. The same thing happened with the semifinals on Friday. Wozniacki needed just one hour and 16 minutes to take down Vesnina in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to capture her third title of the year and sixth of her career. "I'm very happy the way I played this week and to win this tournament two times in a row feels really good," Wozniacki said on her first ever successful title defense. "I've been working hard. Now it's my time. It's my turn to win some tournaments. I feel I've had a great year and I'm so happy it's my name coming up a lot of times now." Vesnina, who has never won a championship in her career, fell to 1-3 lifetime against Wozniacki. This was their third meeting this year. Vesnina won a quarterfinal encounter in Auckland, while Wozniacki captured a semifinal bout in Pontre Vedra Beach, Florida. "She's one of the hottest players on the Tour. She's playing a lot and having good results," Vesnina said. "It's a great tournament here in New Haven. It's my first time here. I heard a lot of good things about this tournament so I'm happy I came here, and I'm really happy I got to the final." The 19-year-old Wozniacki claimed $98,500 for the victory.
