New Haven, CT (My Sportsbook) - Second-seeded Fernando Verdasco took down sixth-seeded Sam Querrey in the title match Saturday night to capture the $750,000 Pilot Pen Tennis event, a final U.S. Open tune-up. Verdasco of Spain discarded American Querrey 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in 1 hour, 35 minutes on the hardcourts at Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Wild card Verdasco won 72 percent of his service points to claim his first ATP World Tour final of the year. Verdasco lost in the Brisbane final earlier this year. The Spaniard fended off three set points in the tiebreaker to win the third final of his career. His last title came in Umag in '08. The 6-foot-6 Querrey titled in Los Angeles earlier this month and now has appeared in five finals this season. The 21-year-old Californian has captured the US Open Series points title leading into the upcoming U.S. Open, which will get underway Monday in New York. Querrey is 20-6 since July. This was the first meeting between Querrey and Verdasco. Both players played twice on Saturday since rain forced the postponement of the men's semifinals on Friday. In the first semifinal match of the day, Querrey beat Argentine Jose Acasuso 6-3, 6-4. In the second semifinal contest, Verdasco edged out seventh-seeded Russian Igor Andreev 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5). Verdasco collected $94,000 with the victory.
