Madrid, Spain (My Sportsbook) - Cristiano Ronaldo scored in his La Liga debut but Lassana Diarra provided the match-winner, helping new-look Real Madrid win its first game after spending nearly $400 million in the offseason, 3-0 at the Bernabeu over Deportivo on Saturday.
Real veteran Raul scored Madrid's first and Ronaldo converted from the spot, but Diarra's goal was the lone one Deportivo didn't answer, as Madrid grabbed a quick lead atop La Liga.
Riki and Juan Carlos Valeron scored for Deportivo, which answered Real's first two goals in four and 11 minutes, respectively.
Real also debuted Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema and Alvaro Arbeloa, but it was a pair of holdovers who made the biggest difference.
Kaka and Benzema helped set up the opener, with the Brazilian's through ball freeing Benzema behind the defense. Benzema's low shot was deflected to the near post by goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia and Raul slotted the rebound into an empty net in the 26th.
Deportivo answered quickly, though, as Juca's free kick found Riki in the box and he squeezed between two defenders to slot past Iker Casillas in the 30th.
Raul set up Ronaldo's second goal when he was taken down by Aranzubia, and the FIFA World Player of the Year converted in the 35th for his first league goal.
Deportivo answered again right out of the break when Andres Guardado's cross found an unmarked Valeron, and he beat Casillas with a low shot in the 46th.
Valeron wasted a chance to hand Deportivo the lead in the 57th, but Diarra did not waste his chance in the 60th.
Diarra had a little space 25 yards out on the top of the box and he dribbled to his right, then slotted back to the left post to easily beat Aranzubia.
Real had a chance to seal the match a minute later, but after Benzema's first shot was knocked down by Aranzubia, the Deportivo goalie lunged to knock the ball away from Raul before Benzema wasted another chance by hitting the bar.
Madrid finally settled in over the final 30 minutes to open a new era with a victory.
Also Saturday, Javier Arizmendi scored in the 74th as Real Zaragoza opened the season with a 1-0 win over promoted Tenerife.
On Sunday, Mallorca hosts Xerez, Malaga hosts Atletico Madrid, Osasuna hosts Villarreal, Racing hosts Getafe, Athletic Bilbao hosts Espanyol, Valencia hosts Sevilla and Almeria hosts Valladolid.
On Monday, Barcelona, which beat Shaktar in the UEFA Super Cup 1-0 on Friday, opens against Sporting Gijon.
