Snoqualmie, WA (My Sportsbook) - Mark O'Meara fired a six-under 66 to take the first-round lead Friday at the Boeing Classic.
O'Meara, playing in one of the last groups of the day, eagled the 18th hole for a two-shot lead over Loren Roberts, Allen Doyle, Mark McNulty and John Jacobs.
Defending champion Tom Kite, a two-time Boeing Classic winner, leads a group of 11 players who stand another stroke further back at three-under 69. Bernhard Langer, Nick Price and John Cook are also in that group.
O'Meara collected five birdies and a bogey before holing an 18-foot putt for his eagle at the 18th. He posted his best opening-round score of the season by two shots, and took his first solo 18-hole lead since the 2007 AT&T Championship.
Only a bogey at the par-four 16th kept the 52-year-old from posting a spotless round -- but he wasn't alone. None of the 78 players in the field finished without a bogey on Friday.
"It was good to finish with the eagle," O'Meara said.
O'Meara is still seeking his first Champions Tour win after claiming two majors and 16 titles in a successful PGA Tour career.
"I hit the ball better at times now than I did in 1998 when I won two majors," said O'Meara, who won the Masters and British Open that season.
He doesn't have the short five-year history of the Boeing Classic on his side.
No first-round leader has ever won this event, and only four 18-hole leaders have won during the 2009 season.
But O'Meara, after finishing as a runner-up seven times (including three times this season), says he finally sees light at the end of the tunnel.
"I've had some opportunities and I hope I am going to break through soon," he said. "I'm impressed with how well guys play [on the Champions Tour]. It's not that easy out here."
"It's a building process," O'Meara added. "If I can get there enough times, maybe I'll win eventually. I've won at every level. It would be nice to win out here."
