New Haven, CT (My Sportsbook) - Second-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki and Russian Elena Vesnina moved indoors for semifinal victories at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis event, a final U.S. Open tune-up. The semifinals were to have been played outdoors on the hardcourts at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, but instead the tournament moved inside due to persistent rain. Wozniacki remained alive for a repeat championship as she bested third-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta, 6-4, 6-1. Wozniacki topped Russian Anna Chakvetadze in last year's New Haven finale. Pennetta was dealt just her third defeat over his last 21 matches. That includes a pair of titles in Palermo and Los Angeles. The other semifinal saw Vesnina rally to beat eight-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at the Cullman-Heyman Courts. The former world No. 1 and two-time major titlist Mauresmo was a New Haven finalist back in 2005. The final is slated for Saturday afternoon, but because of Tropical Storm Danny, there is a chance the match could move indoors again. Wozniacki is going after her third title this year and sixth of her career. Vesnina, who has never won a championship, is 1-2 lifetime against Wozniacki. Two of those meetings have come this year. Vesnina won a quarterfinal encounter in Auckland, while Wozniacki captured a semifinal bout in Pontre Vedra Beach, Florida. The 2009 New Haven champ will claim $98,500.
