Indianapolis, IN (My Sportsbook) - Chad Chaffin captured Friday night's Power Stroke Diesel 200 at the 0.686-mile Indianapolis Raceway Park. The No.18 Dodge crossed the finish line 0.348 seconds ahead of runner-up Johnny Sauter.
The victory was Chaffin's second of the season and second of his truck career. Chaffin's first Craftsman Truck Series win came in June of this year at Dover.
"I drove hard all night," said Chaffin.
Actually Chaffin led only about three-quarters of one lap. Sauter had truly dominated the race, leading 139 of 200 laps and building a lead of over 10 seconds with just 25 laps to go.
But then a bit of bad racing luck as some debris was spotted by officials and it brought out a caution flag. Sauter and second-place Dennis Setzer elected to stay out on the track, but all the other lead-lap cars went down pit lane for new tires.
On the restart with 18 laps to go, Sauter continued to lead, but Travis Kvapil moved past Setzer. Sauter built up a lead of over a second when Steve Park spun out on lap 190.
The green flag dropped on lap 196 and Kvapil, on new tires, stayed right on Sauter's bumper. He made inside passing attempts on lap 197 and 198, but Sauter held him off. As they drivers took the white flag and headed into turn one, Kvapil again looked to the bottom of the track to pass. Sauter slid down the track to block and that left an opening for Chaffin on the top of the track.
The No.18 Bobby Hamilton Racing driver didn't hesitate and drove around the outside and to the lead on the back stretch. He then held off Sauter for the victory.
"The No.43 (Sauter) and the No.24 (Kvapil) hit and it opened up the outside groove and I just shot the gap and it paid off," said Chaffin.
"I was just out of tires, it was really pretty simple," said a disappointed Sauter.
Bobby Hamilton, Kvapil and Carl Edwards completed the top-five.
Hamilton's third-place finish helped the owner/driver assume the top spot in the championship. Hamilton now leads Setzer by five points (2,103-2,098). Edwards (1,981) is in third place followed by Chaffin (1,965) and Matt Crafton (1,929).
The next race in the Craftsman Truck Series championship, the Toyota Tudra 200 from the Nashville Superspeedway, is scheduled for Saturday, August 14th.
