New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The draw for the U.S. Open was revealed on Thursday, and top seed Roger Federer could meet former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the men's final.
Federer and Nadal have never squared off in a U.S. Open final, but it could be a possibility next month. They've met in seven major finals, with the Spaniard winning five-of-seven.
The reigning five-time champion Federer will open defense of his titles against American Devin Britton. The Swiss could face eighth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals and possibly Novak Djokovic or Andy Roddick in the semis.
A potential third-round opponent for Federer could be 2001 champion and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt. Federer beat Hewitt in the 2004 finale in Flushing.
Federer is the all-time men's king with 15 major titles, including the last five in the Big Apple. He hasn't lost in New York since 2003, the year Roddick claimed his only Grand Slam championship.
The amazing Federer beat Britain's Andy Murray in last year's U.S. Open finale.
A fifth-seeded Roddick, who will open his stay against German Bjorn Phau, was last month's Wimbledon runner-up to Federer, who has won two straight and three of the last four major titles on the men's side.
The former U.S. Open champion and 2006 runner-up Roddick could face the 2007 runner-up Djokovic in the quarters in the top half of the draw. The former Australian Open titlist Djokovic will battle Croat Ivan Ljubicic in round one.
In the bottom half of the draw, we could see a Nadal-Murray semifinal. The third-seeded Aussie Open champion Nadal will open up against Frenchman Richard Gasquet and could face seventh-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarters. Tsonga's first-round opponent will be American Chase Buchanan.
Nadal's best-ever showing at the U.S. Open was a semifinal one a year ago, when he succumbed to the now world No. 2 Murray.
Murray will open up against talented Latvian Ernests Gulbis and could meet towering sixth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the quarters. Del Potro's round-of-128 opponent will be fellow Argentine Juan Monaco.
Another former champion in the men's field is Marat Safin, who will open his fortnight against Austrian Jurgen Melzer. Safin captured the Open title nine years ago.
The 2009 U.S. Open will commence Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
