Madrid, Spain (My Sportsbook) - Sergio Aguero scored for the second time in as many games against Panathinaikos, sealing Atletico Madrid's 2-0 win in the Champions League playoff Tuesday and a spot in group play on aggregate, 5-2.
Aguero scored the game-winner in the first leg in Greece, and added the second goal in the second leg at the Vincente Calderon in the 83rd. Loukas Vyntra put Atletico - which won the first leg 3-2 in Athens - in complete control in the second leg with an own goal in the third minute.
Atletico, which beat Schalke to reach the group stage in last season's event, waits until Thursday to learn its opponents. Lyon, Debrecen, Maccabi Haifa and Zurich also advanced to the group stage.
Panathinaikos, which was eliminated in the first knockout round last season by Villarreal, had no luck against another Spanish side.
Diego Forlan's innocent cross into a nearly empty penalty box was turned into the goal by Vyntra in the third minute, putting Panathinaikos in a position to score three goals to advance.
Vyntra nearly erased his mistake before half, but on an open header just yards in front of the goal, headed well over the net with only Atletico goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo to beat.
Forlan had one of Atletico's best chance of the second half but he directed an open header right at Panathinaikos goalie Mario Galinovic.
Panathinaikos lost Djibril Cisse in the 71st to a red card, and Aguero locked up the win 12 minutes later for Atletico.
Aguero did well to keep his feet and lose a defender 30 yards from goal, drove by two more Panathinaikos players and then slotted just by Galinovic and into the right side.
Atletico joins Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla in the group stage from the Spanish La Liga.
Lyon finished off Anderlecht with a 3-1 win to advance on aggregate, 8-2. The French side capped the series with an easy win, thanks to three goals in the first half from Lisandro Lopez.
Hungary's Debrecen got goals from Jozsef Varga and Gergely Rudolf in the first half for a 2-0 win over Levski Sofia, which wrapped up a 4-1 aggregate win.
Israel's Maccabi Haifa also rolled into the group stage, getting an early goal from Vladimer Dvalishvili in a 3-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg for an easy 5-1 aggregate victory.
Switzerland's Zurich finished off a first leg lead, getting an early goal from Johan Vonlanthen to beat Ventspils 2-1 and advanced on aggregate 5-1.
On Wednesday, Celtic visits Arsenal hoping to overcome a two-goal deficit, FC Cophenhagen visits APOEL, Sheriff visits Olympiacos, Sporting Lisbon visits Fiorentina and Timisoara visits Stuttgart to wrap up the playoff round.
