San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has signed a contract extension through 2015, the team announced Monday. Terms of the deal were not released, though the San Diego Union-Tribune reported the six-year extension guarantees Rivers $38 million and is worth a total of $92 million. The paper reported his contract was due to expire after this season. "This is a good day for the Chargers and Chargers fans," said team president Dean Spanos. "Philip has proven he has all of the necessary qualities to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. He's a proven winner and an unquestioned leader for this football team." Rivers was selected fourth overall in 2004 by the Giants, who sent him to San Diego in a draft-day deal that saw Eli Manning go to New York. The 27-year-old has led the Chargers to the postseason every year since taking over the starting quarterback job in 2006 -- when Rivers was also selected to the Pro Bowl. Last season he led the NFL with a team-record 105.5 passer rating and broke Dan Fouts' club record with 34 touchdown passes. Overall in 2008, Rivers completed 312-of-478 throws for 4,009 yards. In 52 career games -- 48 starts -- Rivers has completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 10,697 yards and 78 scores, with 36 interceptions. He holds a 33-15-0 record. In six career playoff games, Rivers has compiled a 3-3 record, completing 56.6 percent of his throws (107-for-189) for 1,522 yards and seven TDs, with seven interceptions.
