Overland Park, KS (My Sportsbook) - Michael Sim closed with a four-under 67 Sunday to win the Christmas in October Classic.
The win was truly a Christmas gift for Sim as it was his third victory of the season, meaning he has earned the battlefield promotion to the PGA Tour.
The 24-year-old Sim, who completed the event at 20-under-par 264, became the ninth player to earn the in-season promotion to the PGA Tour. The last to do it was Nick Flanagan in 2007.
"It's very relieving," Sim admitted. "I'd been in this position before and I wasn't able to get it done. I tried to stay in the moment as best I could. In Omaha, I found it really difficult to stay focused the last day. Fortunately, I learned how to deal with those distractions. I did everything right today."
The Australian is eligible for the Fall Series events on the PGA Tour and also for the entire 2010 season.
Sim also shattered the tour's single season money record. The $112,000 he collected for this win boosted his season total to $527,079, breaking the old mark by over $32,000, which he did in just 12 starts. Troy Matteson set the old mark of $495,009 in 2005.
Josh Teater was trying to steal the win from Sim, but was derailed by a double-bogey on the 15th. Teater closed with a five-under 66 to take second at minus-18.
Michael Clark II took third at 16-under-par 268 after an eight-under 63 on Sunday.
Sim birdied No. 4 to go with five pars over his first six holes. Meanwhile, Teater was flying up the leaderboard. He birdied four of the first five holes to join his playing partner at minus-16.
Both Sim and Teater birdied the seventh, but Teater gave that shot back with a bogey on the eighth on the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate.
Teater bounced back with a birdie on nine to reclaim a piece of the lead. Sim and Teater birdied 11 and 12 to reach 20-under.
Sim played steady golf from there and it was good enough for the win. He parred the final six holes to fend off Teater, who posted his second top-10 finish of the season.
Teater faltered to a double-bogey on the 15th as his drive hit a cart path and landed in some heather grass. After taking an unplayable lie penalty, Teater's third came up short of the green and he missed a 15-footer for bogey.
"We had a good battle coming down the stretch. That tee shot on 15 is a bit awkward for me and I finally went with a hybrid," said Sim, who played the final 36 holes bogey-free. "It was disappointing to see him hit it out there. He came unstuck and you hate to see that. He was playing such great golf up until then."
Teater dropped another stroke on 17, but closed with a birdie.
Blake Adams finished alone in fourth at 15-under-par 269 after closing with a five-under 66. Chad Collins, who tied for second the last two weeks, took fifth at minus-14 after a final-round 67.
Hunter Haas (70), Sal Spallone (67) and Steve Wheatcroft (71) shared sixth place at 13-under-par 271.
