Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva toppled former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova in straight sets to claim the title at the $2 million Rogers Cup, a U.S. Open tune-up. It took just over two hours for Dementieva to post a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sharapova to record her 14th career tournament victory and third in 2009. It also marked her first WTA win since winning in back-to-back weeks in January in New Zealand and Australia. In a messy first set, the two combined for seven breaks of serve in the 10 games, with Dementieva posting four game wins on her opponent's serve. The second set proved to be much cleaner, as the 27-year-old Olympic champion Dementieva needed just one break of serve while saving two break chances to post the victory. It was Dementieva's third win over Sharapova in 11 tries, as the two were meeting for the first time since the 2008 Australian Open, which Sharapova took in straight sets. Sharapova, who came into the event unseeded as she continues to battle back from injury, is still in search of her first title since April, 2008. The three-time Grand Slam champion recorded her best finish in a tournament since returning from shoulder surgery, posting her eighth runner-up finish on tour. Dementieva claimed $350,000 for the win, while Sharapova took home $175,000 for second place.
