Bryant extends Tradition lead

Sunriver, OR (My Sportsbook) - Brad Bryant fired a five-under 67 on Saturday to extend his lead after the third round of the Tradition, the fourth major of the season on the Champions Tour.

Bryant, who has led after all three rounds, finished 54 holes at 15-under 201 and is two clear of Mike Reid, who posted a 66 in round three, at Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort.

John Cook carded a four-under 68 and is alone in third place at minus-12, which is two better than Larry Mize, who bogeyed the last for a round of two- under 70.

Bryant began the third round with a one-stroke lead over defending champion Fred Funk, but wasted little time in pushing his margin. He sank a 12-foot birdie putt at the first to get to 11-under par.

Bryant parred his next five and recorded an unlikely birdie at the par-three seventh. He rolled in a 35-footer from off the green and that gave him the outright lead after Loren Roberts birdied three of his first six holes.

Reid made his move up the leaderboard with two front-nine birdies and three straight from the 11th. He joined Bryant in first at 12-under par after his birdie at 13, but Bryant reclaimed first on his own with a birdie at the par- five 12th.

After that birdie, Bryant took command of the tournament. He parred 13 and 14, but drained a seven-foot birdie try at the par-four 15th to move two ahead of Reid.

Bryant made it two birdies in a row at the 16th. He hit his third at the par five to 20 feet, but stroked home the putt to go three clear.

Reid birdied the final hole to cut the gap to two. His 66 on Saturday matched his low round of the season, but as he watched, it appeared Bryant would pad the lead.

He hit his tee ball to eight feet at the par-three 17th. Bryant missed the birdie effort, then missed the putting surface at 18. He chipped to two feet and kicked in the short putt for the two-shot lead.

"I made a little adjustment in my putting yesterday and I started putting a little better," said Bryant, who needed 26 putts on Saturday. "Today was one of the best putting rounds I've had in quite some time, so that's encouraging."

Bryant has four Champions Tour victories, including the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. He has never held on to a lead with one round to go on the Champions Tour, but feels like he has a good plan come Sunday.

"I'm going to try and do the same things as always - hit the ball in the fairway, hit the ball on the green and try to putt it near the hole, " said Bryant. "That's my game. You try to put in places you can putt it uphill."

Roberts, the reigning Senior British Open champion, struggled on the back nine Saturday. He tallied two bogeys, including one at the last, en route to a one- under 71. Roberts, the 2005 Tradition winner, is tied for fifth with 2006 winner Eduardo Romero, who had a 70 in round three, at minus-nine.

Funk also had a rough go of it on Saturday. This year's U.S. Senior Open champion had 17 pars and a bogey for a one-over 73. Funk fell into a tie for seventh with Mark O'Meara (68) and Tom Lehman (70) at eight-under-par 208.

Bruce Fleisher is alone in 10th after a one-under 71 put him at seven-under 209.
