Jackson helps Vikings top Chiefs in Favre's Minnesota debut

Minneapolis, MN (My Sportsbook) - Brett Favre made a highly-anticipated if brief debut in the Vikings' second preseason game Thursday, but it was Tarvaris Jackson who shined in leading Minnesota to a 17-13 triumph over the Chiefs.

The loudest cheers were still reserved for Favre, although they wound up being when he emerged from the Metrodome's tunnel for pre-game warmups, once a source of hostile entrances while a member of division-rival Green Bay. He played Minnesota's first two series and ended 1-for-4, completing a four-yard pass to first-round pick Percy Harvin.

It was only Tuesday when Favre reversed course and signed a two-year contract to play in Minnesota -- this after having rebuffed head coach Brad Childress on multiple occasions when asked to unretire for the second time.

While Favre showed some obvious rust, Jackson was doing an about-face of his own. After completing just seven passes for 39 yards in the preseason opener, Jackson led the Vikings to a second-half come-form-behind win.

Jackson took over for Favre and played into the third quarter, completing 12- of-15 passes for 202 yards with two touchdowns -- a 64-yard deep ball to Darius Reynaud and a 13-yard strike to Visanthe Shiancoe.

Reynaud totaled two catches for 88 yards while Shiancoe also hauled in two balls for 42 yards. Sidney Rice had a team-high three receptions for 32 yards.

John David Booty played out the rest of the game and was 6-of-8 passing for 61 yards while Sage Rosenfels, thought to be the backup to Favre, did not play after suffering an ankle injury in last Friday's win over the Indianapolis Colts. Adrian Peterson rushed for 44 yards on 10 carries in the first half.

Matt Cassel led the Chiefs' first-teamers to a pair of scoring drives in the first half after being unable to muster any points in four possessions during last Saturday's loss to the Houston Texans.

Cassel connected on a four-yard TD pass to the recently maligned Dwayne Bowe and finished 9-of-14 passing for 99 yards. Bowe had three receptions for 37 yards, but has been in new head coach Todd Haley's doghouse for poor play in training camp.

Larry Johnson carried the ball eight times for 21 yards while third-year player Jackie Battle totaled 28 yards on nine rushes.

Backup QBs Brodie Croyle and Matt Gutierrez did little to help Kansas City sustain a 10-7 halftime lead as the Chiefs could post only a field goal in the final 30 minutes.

Gutierrez mounted a last-ditch effort in the fourth and marched KC 66 yards down to the Viking one-yard-line. Four plays from there with 55 ticks left went for naught, though, as a pass to newly signed wideout Ashley Lelie fell incomplete on 4th-and-goal with six seconds to play.

Game Notes

Gutierrez was 8-of-13 passing for 68 yards while Croyle connected on 5-of-10 passes for 41 yards...Kansas City's Quinten Lawrence equaled Bowe for a team- high three catches for 19 yards...Harvin's catch from Favre represented his first grab as a Viking.
